Seasonal Allergy Treatment

What Causes Seasonal Allergies in Pets?

Just like humans, dogs and cats can be allergic to pollen, grass, mold, and other environmental triggers that peak during certain times of the year. When your pet inhales or comes into contact with these allergens, their immune system overreacts, producing a protein called immunoglobulin E (IgE) that triggers inflammation and itching.

Unlike people who typically sneeze and get watery eyes, pets show allergies primarily through their skin. Common signs include excessive scratching, paw licking or chewing, red or irritated skin, hot spots, and recurring ear infections. These symptoms can range from mild seasonal irritation to severe discomfort that disrupts sleep and daily activity.

Why Allergies Get Worse Over Time

Pet allergies rarely improve on their own. With each exposure, the immune system can become more reactive, leading to symptoms that often intensify season after season. Untreated allergies can also lead to secondary skin and ear infections caused by bacteria and yeast thriving on irritated skin. Early diagnosis and treatment help break this cycle before it escalates.

Common Seasonal Triggers

Different allergens peak at different times. Tree pollen is most common in spring, grass pollen in summer, and weed pollen and mold spores in fall. Some pets react to multiple allergens throughout the year, leading to symptoms that persist almost year-round. Indoor allergens like dust mites and mold can also overlap, complicating the picture.

How We Can Help

There's no reason for your pet to suffer through allergy season. Treatment starts with identifying the type and severity of your pet's reaction. From there, options include prescription medications and target itch at the source, medicated baths to calm irritated skin, and omega fatty acid supplements that strengthen the skin barrier over time. For pets with severe or complex allergies, allergy testing can identify specific triggers, and immunotherapy can help desensitize the immune system over time.

How do I know if my pet has allergies versus something else?

Look for scratching, paw licking, face rubbing, head shaking, recurring ear infections, red skin, or hair loss. If symptoms come and go with the seasons or flare in certain environments, allergies are likely. A vet exam can rule out other causes, such as infections or parasites.

What time of year are pet allergies worst?

It depends on the allergen. Spring brings tree pollen, summer, grass pollen; and fall, weed pollen and mold. Some pets react to indoor allergens, such as dust mites, year-round. Most seasonal allergy symptoms run from early spring through late fall.

Can I give my pet over-the-counter allergy medicine?

Some human antihistamines can be used in pets, but dosing differs, and not all are safe. OTC antihistamines also tend to be less effective for pets than prescription options. Talk to your vet before giving anything at home.

My pet keeps getting ear infections. Could allergies be the cause?

Yes. Recurrent ear infections are among the most common signs of allergies in dogs. Allergic inflammation creates a warm, moist environment that favors the growth of yeast and bacteria. If your pet has had multiple ear infections, an allergy evaluation is worth pursuing.

How long does it take for allergy treatment to work?

Prescription medications often provide noticeable relief within a few days to a week. Secondary infections may take 2 to 4 weeks to clear. Skin-supporting supplements typically need 6 to 8 weeks to show full results.

Will my pet need allergy medication forever?

Seasonal allergies are generally lifelong, but that doesn't always mean daily medication year-round. Some pets only need treatment during peak season, while others do better with consistent management. The goal is to find the minimum that keeps your pet comfortable.

Can allergies develop later in life?

Yes. Allergies typically appear between ages 1 and 3, but can start at any age. They can also worsen over time. If your adult pet suddenly shows allergy symptoms, it's worth getting them checked, even if they've never had issues before.

My pet is itchy, but I don't see fleas. Could it still be fleas?

Yes. Some pets are so allergic to flea saliva that a single bite causes intense itching for weeks, even if you never spot a flea. Strict year-round flea prevention is often recommended as part of allergy management.

What's the difference between food allergies and environmental allergies?

Environmental allergies (pollen, dust, mold) tend to be seasonal and cause skin-related symptoms such as itching and ear infections. Food allergies are year-round and can also cause GI symptoms like vomiting or diarrhea. Some pets have both. Testing and a vet evaluation can help identify which type your pet is dealing with.

How much does allergy treatment cost?

Costs depend on severity and the type of treatment recommended. Visit our [pricing page] for details on exam fees and common treatment options.
