Leptospirosis Vaccine

How Dogs Are Exposed

Leptospirosis is caused by Leptospira bacteria shed in the urine of infected animals, including rats, raccoons, deer, and opossums. The bacteria survive in soil and water, particularly in warm, moist conditions, and can remain infectious for weeks to months.

Dogs become infected through contact with contaminated water or soil, most commonly by drinking from puddles or standing water, swimming in natural bodies of water, or walking through wet grass or mud where infected wildlife have been. The bacteria enter through the mucous membranes or breaks in the skin.

Exposure is not limited to rural settings. Urban and suburban dogs encounter leptospirosis risk through puddles, drainage areas, and parks where wildlife pass through. Any dog that spends time outdoors has meaningful exposure potential.

Why Annual Vaccination Matters

The leptospirosis vaccine differs from some core vaccines in one important respect: immunity wanes within 12 months. Unlike DA2PP, which can protect for up to three years with certain formulations, leptospirosis requires an annual booster to maintain reliable coverage. A dog vaccinated 18 months ago is not adequately protected.

The current vaccine covers the four Leptospira serovars most commonly associated with disease in North American dogs: Canicola, Icterohaemorrhagiae, Grippotyphosa, and Pomona. Dogs that have never been vaccinated require an initial two-dose series given 2 to 4 weeks apart, followed by annual boosters.

Because leptospirosis is zoonotic, vaccinating your dog also reduces transmission risk to members of your household, particularly young children, elderly family members, or those who are immunocompromised.

What is leptospirosis in dogs?

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection caused by Leptospira organisms, primarily affecting the kidneys and liver. It can lead to acute kidney failure, liver disease, and in severe cases, death. It is also transmissible to humans, making it one of the more significant zoonotic diseases in veterinary medicine.

How do dogs get leptospirosis?

Dogs are exposed through contact with water, soil, or surfaces contaminated with the urine of infected animals. Common sources include puddles, ponds, streams, wet soil, and areas frequented by wildlife such as rats, raccoons, and deer.

Is the leptospirosis vaccine necessary for indoor dogs?

Petfolk recommends it for all dogs. Even those with limited outdoor access encounter risk through routine activities such as walking on grass or visiting parks where wildlife may have passed. The infection can be severe, and the vaccine is safe and well-tolerated.

How often does my dog need the lepto vaccine?

Annually. The leptospirosis vaccine provides approximately 12 months of protection. Dogs that have never been vaccinated require an initial two-dose series before transitioning to annual boosters.

Are there side effects from the leptospirosis vaccine?

Mild reactions, such as temporary soreness, lethargy, or reduced appetite, may occur for 24 to 48 hours. Serious reactions are uncommon. Dogs are monitored after vaccination, and guidance is provided on what to watch for at home.

Can leptospirosis spread from my dog to me?

Yes. Leptospirosis is zoonotic and can be transmitted through contact with an infected dog's urine or contaminated water. Vaccinating your dog significantly reduces this risk, particularly in households with young children or immunocompromised individuals.

What are the signs of leptospirosis in dogs?

Signs vary depending on severity and which organs are affected. Common presentations include fever, lethargy, vomiting, decreased appetite, changes in urination, muscle pain, and jaundice. Some cases are mild, while others progress rapidly to kidney or liver failure.

My dog already had leptospirosis. Do they still need the vaccine?

Yes. Natural infection does not reliably provide broad or lasting immunity against all relevant serovars. Vaccination after recovery is still recommended for comprehensive protection.

Can puppies receive the leptospirosis vaccine?

Yes. It is typically introduced around 12 weeks of age as part of the puppy vaccination series, with a second dose 2 to 4 weeks later. Timing is determined based on the puppy's age and health status.

Is the lepto vaccine included in the DA2PP combination shot?

Some combination vaccines include leptospirosis, often labeled as DA2PPL. Others do not. Your dog's vaccination records are reviewed to confirm which serovars are covered and whether a standalone lepto vaccine is needed.
