The Diagnostic Process
Pets can't tell us where it hurts or how long they've been feeling off, so diagnosing illness takes a careful, systematic approach. Our team works through each step with purpose, making sure nothing gets overlooked along the way.
It starts with you. We'll listen closely as you describe what you've noticed at home, whether that's a change in appetite, energy, behavior, bathroom habits, or something that just doesn't seem right. You know your pet better than anyone, and those observations are often the most valuable starting point we have.
Next, our veterinary team performs a comprehensive physical exam, assessing your pet from nose to tail, including heart and lung sounds, skin and coat condition, eyes, ears, and abdomen. We're looking for anything that confirms, contradicts, or adds to what you've described.
Based on what we find, we recommend specific diagnostic tests tailored to your pet's symptoms rather than running everything at once. This targeted approach helps us work efficiently, narrowing the possibilities step by step until we identify the underlying cause. Once we have a clear picture, we can recommend a treatment plan with confidence.
Throughout the process, we keep you informed and explain what we're looking for at each stage. You'll always understand the "why" behind every recommendation and what the next step looks like.
Advanced Technology, Fast Answers
Waiting for answers is stressful, which is why our in-house laboratory delivers same-day results for many common tests. That means we can often move forward with a treatment plan the same day rather than leaving you to wait and worry.
Our digital X-rays are enhanced with artificial intelligence and reviewed by board-certified radiologists, combining speed with expert-level accuracy. For more complex cases requiring specialized testing, we partner with trusted reference laboratories for detailed analysis. No matter the path, we walk you through what each test is designed to detect and what the results mean for your pet's next steps.
My pet is acting normal now, but was sick earlier. Do they still need to be seen?
Yes, we'd still recommend an exam. Pets are good at hiding discomfort, and symptoms that come and go can point to something that needs attention. It's always better to catch things early than wait for them to get worse.
How much will diagnostic testing cost?
Costs depend on what tests your pet needs. We'll always explain what we're recommending and why, and discuss pricing before moving forward. We won't run tests without your approval.
How long does it take to get results back?
Many tests from our in-house lab come back the same day, sometimes within hours. X-rays are typically reviewed quickly as well. If we send samples to a reference lab, results usually take 2 to 5 business days.
Does my pet need to fast before bloodwork?
In most cases, yes. We typically recommend withholding food for 8 to 12 hours before bloodwork for the most accurate results. Water is fine. We'll let you know what to expect when you schedule.
Will the tests hurt my pet?
Most diagnostic tests involve minimal discomfort. Blood draws and X-rays are quick, and our team uses gentle handling throughout. If your pet is anxious or a procedure requires them to stay very still, we may recommend light sedation to keep them comfortable.
What if you can't figure out what's wrong right away?
It happens. Some conditions take more than one round of testing to pin down. If initial results narrow things but don't give us a clear answer, we'll talk through the next steps with you, whether that's additional testing, a trial treatment, or a referral to a specialist.
My pet keeps getting sick, and no one can figure out why. Can you help?
Chronic or recurring symptoms can be tricky, but they're often diagnosable with the right approach. We'll review your pet's full history, look for patterns, and build a step-by-step plan. Sometimes a fresh perspective and thorough workup make all the difference.
Do you test for tick-borne illnesses, such as Lyme disease?
Yes. We test for common tick-borne diseases, including Lyme, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis. These can be run as part of a routine screening or when your pet's symptoms suggest a possible tick-related infection.
What's the difference between a wellness exam and diagnostic testing?
A wellness exam is a routine checkup for pets that appear healthy, designed to catch potential issues early. Diagnostic testing is what we recommend when your pet shows symptoms, and we need to find out what's causing them.
What happens after you figure out what's going on?
We'll walk you through treatment options, which could include medications, dietary changes, ongoing monitoring, or other therapies, depending on what we find. We'll set expectations for recovery and schedule follow-ups to ensure your pet is improving.
