DHPP Vaccine
What Is the DHPP Vaccine?
The DHPP vaccine, sometimes called DA2PP or the "distemper combo," is a core vaccine that protects dogs against four serious diseases in a single injection:
Distemper attacks the respiratory, gastrointestinal, and nervous systems. It spreads through the air and is often fatal. Dogs that survive may have permanent neurological damage, including seizures and muscle twitches.
Hepatitis (Adenovirus) targets the liver and other organs. Severe cases can cause sudden death. The virus spreads through contact with infected urine, feces, and saliva.
Parainfluenza is a respiratory virus that contributes to kennel cough. While not usually fatal on its own, it causes significant discomfort and spreads rapidly wherever dogs congregate.
Parvovirus destroys the intestinal lining, causing severe bloody diarrhea, vomiting, and life-threatening dehydration. It's extremely contagious and can survive in the environment for over a year. Puppies are especially vulnerable, and treatment is expensive with no guarantee of survival.
Why DHPP Is Considered a Core Vaccine?
Core vaccines are recommended for all dogs regardless of lifestyle because the diseases they prevent are widespread, highly contagious, and cause severe illness or death. Your dog can be exposed simply by walking where an infected dog has been, sniffing contaminated surfaces, or breathing the same air.
Even dogs that stay mostly indoors or in their own yard can be at risk. Wildlife can carry distemper, and parvovirus can be tracked into your home on shoes and clothing. Vaccination is the only reliable protection against these diseases.
When does my puppy need their first DHPP vaccine?
Puppies typically start the DHPP series at 6 to 8 weeks of age, with boosters every 3 to 4 weeks until around 16 weeks of age. The series is necessary because maternal antibodies can interfere with vaccine effectiveness, and their decline varies in timing.
How many DHPP shots does my puppy need?
Most puppies need 3 to 4 doses during their first few months. After the puppy series, they receive a booster at one year, then every 1 to 3 years as adults.
Is DHPP the same as DA2PP or DAPP?
Yes, these are different names for the same core vaccine. The letters refer to the diseases covered. Some versions include additional components, such as leptospirosis, listed as DHLPP or DA2PP-L.
Can my puppy go outside before finishing their DHPP series?
Limit exposure to unvaccinated dogs and high-risk areas like dog parks until your puppy completes their series around 16 weeks. Parvovirus is hardy and can survive in soil and on surfaces for over a year. Socialization is still important during this time, just choose environments with vaccinated dogs.
Is the DHPP vaccine safe?
Yes. The DHPP vaccine has been used safely for decades. Some dogs experience mild soreness at the injection site or slight tiredness for a day or two. Serious reactions are rare.
How often does my adult dog need DHPP boosters?
After the one-year booster, most adult dogs receive DHPP every 1 to 3 years, depending on lifestyle and risk factors.
My dog is mostly indoors. Do they still need DHPP?
Yes. These viruses can enter your home on shoes, clothing, and hands. Distemper can also be carried by wildlife. Parvovirus survives in the environment for extended periods.
What if my dog missed a booster?
Schedule an appointment as soon as possible. Depending on how long it's been, your dog may need a single booster or a short series to restore full protection.
Can DHPP be given with other vaccines?
Yes. DHPP is commonly given alongside rabies and Bordetella. For puppies or dogs receiving several vaccines at once, your vet may spread them across visits depending on what's appropriate for your pet.
How much does the DHPP vaccine cost?
Pricing is available at Petfolk near you. We're transparent about costs, and vaccination is significantly less expensive than treating parvovirus or distemper.
