Common Skin Conditions in Pets
Skin problems are among the most common reasons pets visit the vet. From seasonal allergies and hot spots to bacterial infections and chronic conditions like atopic dermatitis, skin issues can cause significant discomfort. Symptoms such as itching, redness, hair loss, and odor often overlap across conditions, making an accurate diagnosis essential.
Environmental allergens like pollen, dust mites, and grass trigger seasonal or year-round itching and irritation.
Food sensitivities may develop over time and cause chronic skin issues, often alongside digestive symptoms.
Flea allergy dermatitis occurs when even a single flea bite causes intense itching and skin reactions in sensitive pets.
Bacterial or yeast infections often develop secondary to allergies or other conditions, causing odor, redness, and discomfort.
Because many skin conditions share similar symptoms, identifying the underlying cause is key to effective treatment. Our veterinarians conduct thorough evaluations and diagnostic testing to determine what's affecting your pet, so we can provide targeted care that addresses the problem at its source.
Effective Treatment for Your Pet's Skin Condition
Skin conditions rarely resolve on their own. Without treatment, they often progress. Chronic scratching can lead to hair loss, open sores, and secondary infections.
Most skin problems are very treatable once we identify the cause. Depending on your pet's condition, treatment may include medicated shampoos, topical therapies, allergy management, dietary changes, or prescription medications. For chronic conditions, we develop ongoing care plans to help manage symptoms.
Many pets show significant improvement within a few weeks of starting treatment.
Why is my dog scratching so much?
Excessive scratching usually indicates allergies (environmental, food, or flea), skin infections, parasites, or dry skin. Even if you don't see anything obvious, the irritation is real. An exam can determine the cause.
Can pets have food allergies?
Yes. Dogs and cats can develop allergies to food ingredients, most commonly to proteins such as chicken, beef, or fish. Food allergies typically cause year-round itching affecting the ears, paws, and rear end. Diagnosis requires a strict elimination diet trial.
What are the signs of skin allergies in pets?
Persistent scratching, licking (especially paws), rubbing the face, red or irritated skin, recurrent ear infections, hair loss, and hot spots. Symptoms may be seasonal or year-round depending on the allergen.
How do you treat pet allergies?
Treatment depends on the type and severity. Options include avoiding triggers, taking antihistamines, using prescription medications such as Apoquel or Cytopoint, using medicated shampoos, taking fatty acid supplements, and undergoing immunotherapy. We tailor treatment to your pet's specific needs.
What causes hot spots on dogs?
Hot spots develop when a dog licks, scratches, or chews an itchy area until the skin becomes raw and infected. Common triggers include flea bites, allergies, moisture trapped under thick fur, minor wounds, or ear infections.
Why does my pet keep getting ear infections?
Recurrent ear infections often signal underlying allergies. Allergic inflammation changes the ear environment, making it easier for bacteria and yeast to overgrow. Pets with floppy ears, narrow ear canals, or those who swim frequently are also more prone.
Is my pet's skin condition contagious?
It depends. Ringworm and certain mites (such as sarcoptic mange) can spread to other pets and sometimes to humans. Bacterial and yeast infections, allergies, and most other skin conditions are not contagious.
Can I use human skin products on my pet?
We don't recommend it. Pets have different skin pH than humans, and many human products can irritate or harm your pet. Some are even toxic. Always check with us first.
How long does it take for skin conditions to improve?
It varies. Hot spots can improve within a week. Allergies and chronic conditions may take several weeks to months to manage, and some require ongoing maintenance.
When should I see a vet for my pet's skin problems?
Don't wait. If your pet is scratching excessively, losing hair, developing sores, or seems uncomfortable, schedule a visit. Early treatment prevents secondary infections and helps your pet feel better faster.
