What Is Dog Flu?
Canine influenza is a contagious respiratory infection caused by influenza viruses that specifically affect dogs. Two strains currently circulate in the United States: H3N8 (originating in horses) and H3N2 (originating in birds in Asia). Dogs have no natural immunity to these viruses, which means nearly all dogs exposed will become infected.
Dog flu spreads through respiratory droplets from coughing and sneezing, through direct contact with infected dogs, and through contaminated objects like water bowls, toys, and even human hands and clothing. The virus can survive on surfaces for up to 48 hours, on clothing for 24 hours, and on hands for 12 hours.
Which Dogs Are at Risk?
Dogs with the highest risk are those who regularly interact with other dogs. This includes dogs who attend daycare or boarding facilities, visit dog parks or grooming salons, participate in training classes, shows, or competitions, or live in multi-dog households where new dogs are introduced.
Dogs who stay home and have minimal contact with other dogs have a lower risk. However, outbreaks can occur in any community, and the virus spreads rapidly once introduced.
What are the symptoms of dog flu?
Persistent cough, runny nose, fever, lethargy, and reduced appetite. Symptoms typically last 2 to 3 weeks. Some dogs develop more severe illness, including high fever and pneumonia, particularly puppies, seniors, and dogs with other health conditions.
Is canine influenza the same as kennel cough?
No. They cause similar symptoms but are different diseases. Kennel cough is caused primarily by Bordetella bacteria and parainfluenza virus. Canine influenza is caused by influenza viruses. Vaccination against one does not protect against the other.
Can I catch dog flu from my dog?
No. Canine influenza viruses do not infect humans. However, the virus can spread between dogs via hands and clothing, so handwashing after contact with symptomatic dogs is recommended.
Can cats get canine influenza?
The H3N2 strain can infect cats, though this is uncommon. Cats typically show mild respiratory symptoms. If your dog is diagnosed with H3N2, monitor household cats for symptoms.
Does my dog need the canine influenza vaccine?
Dogs who regularly interact with other dogs through boarding, daycare, grooming, dog parks, training classes, or shows benefit from vaccination. Dogs with minimal contact with other dogs are at lower risk. We can assess your dog's lifestyle and provide a recommendation.
How many shots does my dog need?
Two doses given 2 to 4 weeks apart for initial vaccination. Full protection develops about two weeks after the second dose. A single annual booster maintains ongoing protection.
How far in advance should I vaccinate before boarding?
For dogs who have never received the vaccine, the initial two-dose series, plus two weeks for full protection, means starting at least 4 to 6 weeks before boarding. Dogs who are current on vaccination typically need a booster at least two weeks before boarding.
Is the canine influenza vaccine safe?
Yes. Side effects are typically mild and short-lived, such as slight soreness at the injection site or mild tiredness for a day or two. Serious reactions are rare.
Can my dog still get dog flu if vaccinated?
Vaccination significantly reduces the risk of infection and the severity of illness if infection occurs. Vaccinated dogs who become infected typically have milder symptoms and shed less virus, reducing spread to other dogs.
Is canine influenza required for boarding?
Many boarding facilities require canine influenza vaccination in addition to bordetella and other vaccines. Requirements vary by facility. We can help ensure your dog meets the facility's specific requirements.
How much does the canine influenza vaccine cost?
We provide transparent pricing during your visit. The vaccine is a worthwhile investment compared to the cost of treating a dog flu infection, which may require medications, supportive care, and potentially hospitalization.
