by Petfolk

Daily exercise is vital to you and your dog's physical and mental health, so why not head out for a hike together? True, it can be challenging to find a great trail that is a level appropriate for you and your dog and tailored to their personality. However, if you know where to look, you’ll find an abundance of trails that offer a wide variety of views, difficulty, and accessibility.

Here are five of the most highly rated dog-friendly hiking trails in Wake Forest, NC, according to local dog parents like yourself. These selected trails feature both easy and moderately hard hiking, as well as something for the calmer dog as well as the very energetic. And don’t forget to pack a leash for your dog as all trails are on-leash hiking adventures.

Neuse River Trail

Located in Anderson Point Park, the Neuse River Trail is an easy 27.2-mile trail appropriate for all levels of hiker. The trail extends from Falls Dam to the WRAL Soccer Center in Raleigh. The trail is paved and at least 6 feet wide to accommodate walking, running, and biking. This trail also has a paved parking lot at the start of the trail at the north end of Old Falls of Neuse Road. On-leash dogs are welcome to take a walk and enjoy the beautiful views with their owners.

Shoreline Trail

Come discover this highly-rated, 3.9-mile loop trail that boasts water-front views for nearly the entire hike. Your furry friend will enjoy seeing the abundance of wildlife such as squirrels, deer, and herons, as well as people as it's a popular place for birders, hikers, and runners. If you go during the quieter times of the day, you can enjoy a bit of solitude on the benches placed at random points throughout the trail. Dogs must be on-leash at this year-round trail located within Forest Ridge Park.

E. Carroll Joyner Park Trails

If you're looking for a shorter, gentle hike, enjoy this well-maintained paved trail that hosts cyclists, in-line skaters, and dogs with their pet parents. Your dog will have plenty to explore in this very green 1.9-mile loop that hosts benches, gardens, and historic structures. Parking and restrooms are also available, and the trail is wheelchair accessible.

Beaver Dam West Loop Trail

For those dogs who like (or need) a calmer trail with fewer people, this 8.7-mile trail in Falls Lake Park is relaxing with plenty of trees and calming water views. A popular spot for very polite mountain bikers, the trail is pretty quiet, perfect for weekday hikes with dogs that are easily excited or for a more mature dog that likes a little peace on their walk. There are some hilly spots, but the trail is considered easy.

Falls Dam to Ann Louise Nature Preserve Trail

Looking for a bit more of a challenge with your adventurous pup? Check out this 4.2-mile out-and-back trail offering gorgeous open views of the lake. While relatively short, this hiking trail offers nice elevation changes often not seen in the Raleigh area. The hike also crosses over creeks and streams, giving you and your dog a nice variety of views (and potential swimming spots for your furry friend). While this is a popular trail, it is usually calm and has a picnic area at the beginning of the hike if you want to bring some friends or enjoy a snack with your four-legged friend.

Enjoy one or all of these highly-rated, well-maintained trails near Wake Forest. Remember, you and your pup need daily exercise, at least 10,000 steps for you and 30 – 120 minutes for your dog. These Wake Forest trails are ideal for getting your exercise, as well as enjoying some quality time in nature with your favorite furry friend. Happy hiking!
