What is diagnostic imaging for pets?

Diagnostic imaging means taking pictures of the inside of your pet's body. Petfolk Fulshear uses two tools:

  • Digital x-rays show bones, joints, the chest and many swallowed objects.

  • Basic ultrasound uses sound waves to see soft tissue, like the bladder, and to look for fluid in the belly or chest.

Neither one hurts. The vet chooses based on the question that needs an answer.

When does a pet need imaging?

The vet may suggest it for:

  • A limp, or a leg your pet won't put weight on.

  • A cough, fast breathing or a change in bark or meow.

  • Vomiting that keeps coming back, or a pet that may have swallowed a toy.

  • A tight or swollen belly.

  • Peeing often, straining, or blood in the urine.

  • A cough or a new lump in an older pet, to check the chest.

  • A lump that needs a closer look before surgery.

At our Houston-area clinics, about 1 in 4 visits for limping include x-rays, and about 1 in 4 visits for urinary problems include an ultrasound (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).

Choosing between x-rays and ultrasound

  • Bones and joints: x-rays.

  • Lungs and heart size: x-rays.

  • Swallowed objects: x-rays first. Some items, like fabric, show better on ultrasound.

  • Bladder stones and a clean urine sample: ultrasound, sometimes with x-rays.

  • Fluid in the belly or chest: a quick ultrasound check.

Many pets need only one. Some need both to get a clear answer.

What happens during the imaging visit?

  1. The vet examines your pet and explains why imaging will help.

  2. A team member places your pet on a padded table, gently, using Fear Free handling.

  3. X-rays take a few seconds per view. An ultrasound check takes a few minutes.

  4. Most pets stay awake. If your pet is in pain or can't hold still, the vet may suggest light sedation.

  5. The vet goes over the images with you and explains what they show.

If your pet had x-rays or scans at another clinic, bring the reports or ask that clinic to send the images, so the vet can compare.

Friendly, thorough and professional care.

Getting ready for the visit

You rarely need to do anything special. If sedation is likely, the team may ask you to skip breakfast. For a bladder check, a full bladder helps, so try not to let your dog pee right before you walk in. Cats travel best in a carrier with a towel over it.

What does imaging cost?

A sick visit exam at Petfolk Fulshear starts at $135. X-rays and ultrasound are priced separately, by the number of views or scans needed. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Active dogs on Fulshear trails

Fulshear families walk their dogs at Willow Fork Park, River Green Park and along the Cross Creek Ranch trails. Most sore legs after a long run are a mild sprain and get better with rest. If your dog still limps the next morning, won't use a leg, or yelps when you touch it, an x-ray can show whether a bone or joint is hurt.

When a specialist helps

Basic ultrasound and x-rays answer most first questions. Some cases need a full belly or heart ultrasound, a CT scan or an MRI. The vet will refer you to a specialist and send your pet's images and records. If imaging shows a problem that needs care through the night, the vet will help you get to a 24-hour hospital, such as VEG Katy on West Grand Parkway South.
