What surgeries does Petfolk Fulshear do?

The clinic focuses on soft-tissue surgery. Common reasons include:

  • Removing a skin lump, fatty mass or growth, and sending it to a lab.

  • Repairing a deep cut or a bite wound.

  • Draining and cleaning an abscess.

  • Spays and neuters, which have their own page.

  • Tooth extractions during a dental cleaning.

Leaving out spays, neuters and dental work, more than a third of dog surgeries across Petfolk remove a lump or mass, and about 7 in 10 surgery patients are dogs (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026). At our Houston-area clinics, the typical dog having one of these surgeries is about 7 and a half years old.

Bone and joint surgery, like repair of a torn knee ligament, needs a surgical specialist. If your pet needs one, the vet will explain why and refer you.

Is my pet healthy enough for anesthesia?

The vet starts with a full exam and asks about past illness, allergies and medicines. Many pets, and most older pets, get blood work first to check the liver, kidneys and blood counts. At our Houston-area clinics, about 1 in 5 surgery patients have blood work on the day of surgery (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026). If something looks off, the vet may change the plan or wait. Tell the vet about any supplements, flea products or past reactions to sedation. Older pets and flat-faced breeds, like pugs and bulldogs, may need extra steps to keep breathing easy under anesthesia.

The day of surgery

  1. Stop food at the time the team gives you. Water is usually fine.

  2. Drop your pet off and confirm the best phone number to reach you.

  3. Your pet gets pain medicine before anesthesia starts.

  4. A team member watches heart rate, breathing, oxygen and temperature the whole time.

  5. Your pet wakes up in a warm, quiet space, and the team calls you.

  6. At pickup, you go over home care, medicines and the recheck date.

Fear Free handling starts the moment you arrive. A calm start makes the whole day easier on your pet.

After his surgery, they continued to check on us and answered any questions we had.

What does pet surgery cost?

Every surgery is different, so there is no single price. A sick visit exam to look at a lump or wound starts at $135. Your written estimate lists anesthesia, monitoring, pain medicine, the procedure and any lab fees. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. CareCredit financing is accepted.

Recovery in a Fulshear summer

Keep your pet quiet and on a leash for as long as the vet says, often 10 to 14 days. That means no runs on the Jordan Ranch trails and no trips to the Canine Commons dog park in Cross Creek Ranch until the stitches are out. Keep the cone on and the incision dry. In hot weather, walk early in the day and keep walks short, because a healing dog tires fast. Most pets are sleepy for the rest of the surgery day. Offer a small meal that evening and normal food the next day, unless the vet says otherwise.

Call us if you see this

  • Redness, swelling or discharge at the incision.

  • Not eating for more than a day, or vomiting.

  • Licking or chewing at the stitches.

  • Weakness or heavy panting at rest.

For trouble breathing, pale gums or collapse, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital, such as VEG Katy on West Grand Parkway South.
