Pet Blood Work & Lab Testing in Fulshear, TX, From Your Local Vet

Many results come back during the visit, so treatment can start the same day.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Fulshear is a vet in Fulshear, TX, with an in-house lab that runs many blood and urine tests for dogs and cats. Results from the in-house lab often come back during the visit, so the vet can start treatment the same day. A few tests go to an outside lab and take a few days.

Why would my pet need blood work?

Blood work shows what an exam can't: how the kidneys and liver are working, blood sugar, red and white blood cells, and signs of infection. The vet may suggest it:

  • When your pet is sick, especially with vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss or extra thirst.

  • Before anesthesia for surgery or a dental cleaning.

  • At a yearly checkup for an older pet, to find changes early.

  • To see how a long-term medicine is affecting your pet.

At our Houston-area clinics, about 4 in 10 visits for vomiting or diarrhea include blood work, and more than a third of pets dropped off for a sick visit get it (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).

Which tests are most common?

Many of these run in the in-house lab:

  • CBC (complete blood count): red cells for anemia, white cells for infection or inflammation, and platelets for clotting.

  • Chemistry panel: kidney and liver values, blood sugar, protein and salts.

  • Urinalysis: kidney function, bladder infection and crystals.

  • Thyroid test: often for older cats losing weight, or for tired dogs gaining weight.

  • Heartworm test: a yearly blood test for dogs. See heartworm testing.

  • Fecal test: a stool check for worms. See fecal exams.

Lab work for older pets

Kidney disease and thyroid problems often show up in the blood before a pet looks sick. At our Houston-area clinics, dogs 7 and older are almost twice as likely to get blood work at a wellness visit as dogs aged 1 to 7 (22% vs 13%). Across Petfolk, senior cats are about twice as likely as younger adult cats to have it (34% vs 18%). Both figures cover Oct 2025 to Sep 2026.

A baseline panel while your pet is healthy makes later changes easier to spot. Our senior pet care page explains what else a senior visit covers.

How should I prepare?

Ask whether your pet should skip breakfast. Some values read best on an empty stomach. Water is fine. For a urine test, the team can collect a sample at the clinic, or you can bring a fresh one in a clean container.

Bring a list of your pet's medicines and supplements, since some can change lab values. If your pet gets nervous in the car, ask the team for calming tips before the visit. The blood draw takes about a minute. Fear Free handling, treats and a calm room help most dogs and cats stay relaxed.

They thoroughly explained everything, answered our questions, and were incredibly helpful throughout the visit.

What does blood work cost?

Lab tests are priced by test, and the vet will tell you which ones matter for your pet. A wellness exam starts at $99, and a sick visit exam starts at $135. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year.

Reading the results together

The vet goes over the results with you, explains any number outside the normal range, and says what happens next. Some changes only need a recheck in a few weeks. Others call for medicine, a diet change or more tests. You get a copy to keep, so you can track changes over time. If a result shows your pet needs care through the night, the vet will help you get to a 24-hour hospital, such as VEG Katy on West Grand Parkway South.
