Does my pet's wound need a 24-hour hospital?

Go to a 24-hour hospital right away if your pet is bleeding hard and it won't slow with pressure, was hit by a car, has a wound on the chest or belly that may go deep, can't stand, or is breathing hard. Petfolk Far North Central is a primary and urgent care clinic, not an emergency hospital. The nearest 24-hour option is BluePearl Pet Hospital Stone Oak, at 503 E Sonterra Blvd. Call them on the way.

What wounds can Petfolk Far North Central treat?

Most everyday injuries can be handled at the clinic:

  • Bite wounds from another dog or a cat

  • Cut or torn paw pads

  • Torn or cracked nails, including dewclaws

  • Scrapes, small cuts and skin tears

  • Burned paw pads from hot pavement

  • Swelling from fire ant bites or a bee sting

  • Abscesses, often from an old bite on a cat

The vet cleans the wound and decides whether it needs stitches, a bandage, or to stay open so it can drain. Pain relief and, when needed, antibiotics usually go home with your pet the same day.

Took my cat for an open wound, and they were so calm and patient with him.

What should I do before I get there?

  1. Keep yourself safe. A hurt pet may bite, even one that never has before.

  2. Press a clean cloth or gauze on any bleeding and hold it there.

  3. Don't pour hydrogen peroxide or alcohol into the wound. Both can damage healing tissue.

  4. Stop licking with a cone or a loose T-shirt until you arrive.

  5. For a cut pad, wrap the paw loosely in a clean sock.

Bite wounds look smaller than they are

A dog bite can leave two small holes on the skin and a lot of torn tissue underneath. Cat bites are worse for hiding infection, and they often swell into an abscess a few days later. Have every bite checked the same day, even if your pet seems fine.

Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic. The team moves slowly, uses treats and towels, and may suggest light sedation so a painful wound can be cleaned properly.

When wildlife is involved

Bexar County saw a jump in rabies in 2026. Texas Public Radio reported 22 local rabies cases in June and July alone, and a pet dog tested positive after killing a baby skunk. If a wild animal caused the wound, tell the team and report the contact, even if the animal looked healthy. Make sure your pet's rabies vaccine is current.

How much does wound care cost?

At Petfolk Far North Central, the cost depends on the size of the wound, whether sedation is needed, and the medicine your pet goes home with. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year.

Healing at home

Keep the cone on, keep the wound dry, and give every dose of medicine. Check it twice a day for spreading redness, a bad smell or new swelling, and call (726) 600-3009 if you see any of them. If your pet goes home with a bandage, keep it clean and dry, and slip a plastic bag over it for walks on wet grass. Swollen toes, a bad smell, or a bandage that slips or gets wet means it needs to be changed, so call the clinic. Skip the dog park until the vet says the wound has closed.
