What surgeries does Petfolk Far North Central perform?

Getting ready for surgery day

The team at Petfolk Far North Central gives you written instructions. Usually:

  1. Pre-surgery exam and blood work to check that anesthesia is a safe choice.

  2. No food after the evening before. Water is usually fine until morning; follow your exact instructions.

  3. Morning drop-off. You'll review consent and the estimate, and leave a phone number you'll answer.

  4. Give usual medicines only if the vet says so.

  5. Bring the basics: a leash or carrier, a list of current medicines and supplements, and a towel or blanket from home for the ride back.

You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Keeping your pet safe under anesthesia

Every surgery at Petfolk Far North Central is done under anesthesia with your pet watched closely from start to finish. The vet can walk you through how heart rate, breathing and temperature are tracked for your pet's procedure. Pain relief starts before surgery and continues afterward, so your pet wakes up more comfortable. Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, from drop-off to the moment you pick up.

The two weeks at home after surgery

Most soft tissue surgeries need 10 to 14 days of recovery. At home:

  • Keep the cone or recovery shirt on to stop licking.

  • Limit activity: leash walks only, no running or jumping.

  • Check the incision daily for redness, swelling or discharge.

  • Give every dose of pain medicine as directed.

  • Keep the incision dry: no baths or swimming until the vet says so.

In San Antonio summers, schedule short walks for the coolest part of the day. A recovering pet in a cone overheats more easily.

Hold off on the dog park until the vet clears your dog at the recheck. The shaded dog parks at Phil Hardberger Park are close to the clinic, but running and wrestling can pull a fresh incision open, and splashing at the water fountains gets it wet. A few extra quiet days cost far less than a repair.

Is my pet too old for surgery?

Age is not a disease. The vet at Petfolk Far North Central checks heart, kidney and liver function with blood work and adjusts the anesthesia plan for older pets. For many senior pets, removing a painful or growing lump is worth it. If the numbers show a problem, the vet will talk through the risks with you first, and you decide together whether surgery still makes sense.

What does surgery cost?

At Petfolk Far North Central, the cost depends on the procedure, your pet's size and any lab work. PetfolkCare starts at $199 a year. CareCredit financing is accepted.

Problems after surgery

Call Petfolk Far North Central if the incision opens, bleeds or swells, or if your pet won't eat. Collapse, pale gums or labored breathing needs a 24-hour hospital such as BluePearl Pet Hospital Stone Oak. For routine sterilization, see spay and neuter in Far North Central.
