Spay & Neuter in Far North Central San Antonio, From Your Local Vet
Picking the right age, getting ready, and the two weeks after.
Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Far North Central is a vet in San Antonio, TX, that spays and neuters dogs and cats in its on-site surgery suite. Cats are usually fixed around 5 to 6 months; for dogs, the best age depends on adult size, so the vet picks it with you.
A spay removes a female's ovaries and usually her uterus. A neuter removes a male's testicles. Both are done under general anesthesia, and most pets go home the same day.

When should I spay or neuter my pet?
At Petfolk Far North Central, timing follows species and expected adult size:
Cats: around 5 to 6 months, ideally before the first heat.
Small and medium dogs: often between 6 and 9 months.
Large and giant breeds: often 12 to 18 months, since some bigger dogs may benefit from finishing growth first.
Petfolk-wide, about three in four cats (76%) are fixed before their first birthday, and at least one in four dog spays and neuters involve dogs heavier than 50 pounds (Oct 1, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026). The vet will weigh your dog's breed, health and home life before setting a date.
Why fix a dog or cat?
Spaying ends heat cycles and surprise litters and lowers the chance of a serious uterine infection and some breast tumors. Neutering removes the risk of testicular cancer and often cuts down on roaming and marking. In a city with as many homeless pets as San Antonio, fewer litters also matters.
Cats show the change quickly. A female in heat yowls and paces for days, again and again through warm months. A neutered tomcat is less likely to spray inside or fight outside.
How surgery day works
Pre-surgery exam. The vet checks your pet and may run blood work to make sure anesthesia is a safe choice.
No food the night before. The team will tell you exactly when to stop food and water.
Drop-off in the morning. You'll sign consent and confirm the best phone number.
Surgery with monitoring. Heart rate, breathing and temperature are watched under anesthesia, and pain relief starts before your pet wakes.
Same-day pickup. You get printed home-care steps and a time for the recheck.
You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, so drop-off is calm and unhurried.

What does recovery look like?
Most pets recover from a spay or neuter at Petfolk Far North Central in about 10 to 14 days. During that time:
Keep the cone on so your pet can't lick the incision.
Keep walks short and on leash, and no jumping off furniture.
Skip baths and swimming until the recheck.
Check the incision once a day for swelling or discharge.
Plan around the heat. On summer afternoons, keep the short walks to early morning or after sunset, since a panting pet in a cone has a harder time cooling off.
Adopted from a shelter?
Texas law gives a new adopter one week after surgery to get the vet's signed sterilization letter to the shelter. If your pet came from a San Antonio shelter with a spay-neuter agreement, tell the team so the paperwork is ready at pickup. Many families also add a microchip during the same anesthesia; see pet microchipping in Far North Central.
If something seems wrong at home
Call Petfolk Far North Central if the incision opens, bleeds or swells, or if your pet won't eat by the next day. If your pet collapses or has pale gums and fast breathing, go to a 24-hour hospital such as BluePearl Pet Hospital Stone Oak.
