Rabies Vaccine in Far North Central San Antonio, From Your Local Vet
The one shot Texas law requires, with a certificate the same day.
Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Far North Central is a vet in San Antonio, TX, that gives rabies vaccines to dogs and cats. Texas law requires every dog and cat to be vaccinated by 16 weeks of age and kept current after that.
Once rabies signs start, there is no cure for pets or people, and no test can confirm it in a living animal. The vaccine is how we keep it out of homes.

When does my pet need a rabies shot?
At Petfolk Far North Central, the rabies schedule for dogs and cats is:
First shot: by 16 weeks of age, often at the last puppy or kitten visit.
First booster: one year later.
After that: every 1 or 3 years, depending on which vaccine your pet gets.
If your pet's rabies shot has lapsed, the vet treats the next one as a fresh start, and the timing of the following booster may change. Your record in the Petfolk app shows the exact due date.
Adopted a pet with no paperwork? The vet at Petfolk Far North Central treats a pet with no proof of rabies vaccine as unvaccinated. Your pet gets a first dose that day and a booster one year later, and from then on the schedule is the same as any other pet's.
Is rabies really a risk in North San Antonio?
Yes, and it rose in 2026. Texas Public Radio reported in August 2026 that Bexar County had 22 rabies cases in June and July alone, compared with two or three in the same months of each of the two years before. One of them was a pet dog on the Far West Side that had killed a baby skunk near its home.
Statewide, bats and skunks make up most positive tests, and in 2025 Texas also confirmed rabies in 19 cats and 5 dogs, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Hill Country edges, creeks and greenbelts around Stone Oak bring wildlife close to backyards.
What should I do if my pet meets a wild animal?
Don't touch your pet's wounds with bare hands; wear gloves.
Keep your pet inside and away from other animals.
Call Petfolk Far North Central the same day. A current vaccine plus a prompt booster makes the follow-up much simpler.
Report the encounter to animal control, even if the wild animal seemed healthy, as Bexar County health officials advise.
If your pet bites a person, Texas requires a 10-day observation period for that dog or cat, whatever its vaccine status.
The certificate and the tag
After the shot, Petfolk Far North Central gives you a signed rabies certificate. You'll need it for:
Boarding, grooming and daycare.
The dog parks at Phil Hardberger Park, which require current rabies and other vaccines.
Moving, apartment leases and some HOA rules.
Any bite report.
Fear Free handling is standard at every Petfolk clinic, so the shot takes seconds and comes with treats.
Very kind and gentle and made my dog feel at ease.
