Does an indoor cat really need a rabies shot?

Yes. Texas requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies by 16 weeks of age and kept current, indoors or not. Cats are also the domestic animal that tests positive most often here. The Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed rabies in 19 cats and 5 dogs in 2025. Bats are a common source, and the state found rabies in 15% of the bats it tested in 2025.
