Rabies Vaccine in Nora, IN, From Your Local Vet
The rabies shot Indiana requires for dogs, cats and ferrets, with a certificate for your records.
Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Nora is a vet in Nora, Indianapolis, that gives the rabies vaccine to dogs and cats. Indiana law requires every dog, cat and ferret 3 months and older to be vaccinated against rabies. Petfolk Nora sees dogs and cats only, so ferrets need another clinic.
Rabies is a virus that attacks the brain. Once signs show, there is no cure, for pets or people. The vaccine is the reason pet rabies is now rare in the United States.

What does Indiana law require?
Indiana's rule is short: "All dogs, cats, and ferrets three (3) months of age and older must be vaccinated against rabies" (345 IAC 1-5-2). The rule also sets booster timing, which Petfolk Nora follows:
First rabies shot: at 3 months or older.
Second shot: 12 months after the first, no matter which vaccine was used.
After that: every 12 months for a 1-year vaccine, or within 36 months for a 3-year vaccine.
The Indiana rabies program adds that a licensed and accredited vet, or someone they directly supervise, must give the shot.
Which is better, the 1-year or 3-year rabies shot?
Both protect well when given on time. At Petfolk Nora, many adult dogs move to the 3-year vaccine after their second dose, which means fewer shots over a lifetime. Some cats get a 1-year vaccine made for cats. The vet explains which product your pet is getting and when the next one is due.
What is the rabies certificate for?
At Petfolk Nora, every rabies vaccine comes with a certificate that lists your pet, the product and the due date. You may need it for:
Indy Parks dog parks, which ask for rabies, parvo, distemper and Bordetella records to register
Boarding, daycare and groomers
Renting an apartment that allows pets
Proof after a bite, so your pet's status is clear
Keep a photo of it on your phone.
What if my pet is bitten, or bites someone?
The Indiana rabies program gives these steps:
If your pet is bitten or scratched by an animal: wear gloves, wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 10 minutes, and see a vet, even for a small wound. Reporting a pet bitten by another animal is not required, but the vet may give a booster.
If your pet bites a person: the bite must be reported to the local health department, and a separate report goes to animal control or the police where it happened, per the state's bite reporting page. A current rabies record makes this much simpler.
Wild animals carry most rabies. The state warns that raccoons or skunks out in daylight with no fear of people may be sick. Keep pets away and do not touch them.

A quick, calm visit
Fear Free handling is standard at Petfolk Nora. The shot takes seconds, and the vet checks your pet first, since a healthy pet responds best to a vaccine.
Wow what a friendly knowledgable group of people!
