Pet Wound & Injury Care in Nora, IN, From Your Local Vet

Cuts, bites, torn nails and limps, cleaned and treated the same day.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Nora is a vet in Nora, Indianapolis, that treats cuts, bite wounds, torn nails, scrapes and limps the same day. Walk in or book online, weekends included.

Wounds look smaller on the outside than they are inside. A bite can leave two tiny holes over a deep pocket of damage, so it is worth a look even when it seems minor.

Call (317) 245-3750 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome.

When does an injury need a 24-hour emergency hospital?

Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital right away for bleeding that won't slow after 5 minutes of firm pressure, a wound on the chest or belly that goes deep, trouble breathing, collapse, a leg bent at a strange angle, or a pet hit by a car. MedVet Indianapolis, at 9650 Mayflower Park Drive in Carmel, runs a round-the-clock emergency service with no appointment needed. Go there too if Petfolk Nora is closed.

What first aid should I do at home?

  1. Stay calm and keep your pet still. A hurting pet may bite, even a sweet one.

  2. Press a clean cloth or gauze on a bleeding wound for 5 minutes. Don't lift it to check.

  3. Rinse dirt from a small wound with clean, lukewarm water.

  4. Cover it loosely and keep your pet from licking.

  5. Call Petfolk Nora and head in.

Don't use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or human creams on a wound. They can slow healing or be unsafe if licked.

What happens at an injury visit?

The vet checks the whole pet first, then the wound. Most wounds are clipped and cleaned. Then the vet decides if it needs stitches, a bandage, or to stay open and heal. Pain medicine helps your pet stay comfortable, and antibiotics are used when the wound is likely to get infected. If a bone may be hurt, digital x-rays on site can check. Some deep wounds need surgery. See pet surgery in Nora.

Fear Free handling is standard. The team uses gentle holds, treats and, when needed, calming medicine so cleaning a sore wound is less scary.

Was my pet bitten by a wild animal?

Holliday Park, along the White River, has wooded ravines where deer, fox, beaver and other wildlife pass through, and Nora dogs explore the Monon Trail and its edges. The Indiana Department of Health says if a pet is bitten or scratched, wash the wound with soap and running water for at least 10 minutes and see a vet, even for minor wounds. Bring your pet's rabies record. The vet may suggest a rabies booster. See rabies vaccine in Nora.

Common injuries we see

  • Cut paw pads from glass or sharp ice

  • Torn or broken toenails

  • Bite wounds from a dog park scuffle

  • Scrapes and punctures from sticks

  • Sprains after a hard run

  • Cracked, salt-burned paw pads from treated sidewalks in winter

A pet first aid kit for the car

A small kit helps on a trail or at the dog park:

  • Gauze pads and a roll of self-stick wrap

  • A clean towel and a bottle of clean water for rinsing

  • A soft muzzle, since even gentle pets may snap when hurt

  • A slip leash and your pet's vaccine record on your phone

  • The clinic's number saved in your contacts

Caring for the wound at home

Keep the cone or recovery suit on. Check the wound twice a day for redness, swelling, smell or discharge. Keep bandages clean and dry, and slip a bag over a paw bandage on wet walks. Come back for the recheck, even if it looks fine.

What injury care costs
