Diets made to support the stomach, kidneys, skin or recovery, chosen by your pet's vet.
Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Lake Buena Vista is a vet in Lake Buena Vista, FL, that prescribes therapeutic diets for dogs and cats. What is prescription pet food?
It's a food with a set recipe that targets one health need. For example, it might have less fat, less phosphorus, a single new protein, or extra fiber. Pet store foods can't make those medical claims, and their recipes can change.
Because the diet is part of treatment, a vet needs to examine your pet before prescribing it.
Which problems can a prescription diet help?
Upset stomach and diarrhea. Gentle diets that are easy to digest.
Kidney disease, mostly in older cats.
Bladder stones and crystals, with diets that help dissolve some stones or prevent new ones.
Food allergies, with a new or broken-down protein.
Weight loss, with fewer calories and more fiber to keep pets full.
Recovery after illness or surgery, with dense nutrition in small amounts.
Stomach diets are by far the most common. Across Petfolk, 84% of prescription diets sent home were gastrointestinal diets, and about 11% of orders were recovery diets (Oct 1, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026).
The vet explained the vaccines and took her time to go over his food and any changes needed.

How long will my pet need to eat it?
It depends on the reason. A stomach diet after a bout of diarrhea may last a couple of weeks. A kidney or bladder diet is often for life. A food-allergy trial usually runs 8 to 12 weeks before the vet decides on the next step. The vet will tell you the plan, and when to come back for a recheck.
Rechecks matter. For kidney and bladder diets, the vet may repeat blood or urine tests to see that the food is working. For weight loss, a quick weigh-in every few weeks keeps the plan on track and lets the vet adjust the amount.
How do I switch my pet to a new food?
Unless the vet says to switch at once, mix the new food in slowly over about a week:
A quarter new food for the first two days.
Half and half for the next two.
Three quarters new for two more.
All new food after that.
Give only the diet during a food trial: no treats, table scraps or flavored chews, unless the vet approves them. If your pet refuses the food, call the team. There is often a different flavor or form that works.
Traveling with a special diet
Many families staying near the parks bring their pets along. Pack enough of the diet for the whole trip, plus a few extra days. A sudden switch to hotel treats or a different kibble can undo weeks of progress. If you run low while here, call the clinic, and the vet can examine your pet and help you get back on track.
Prescription food pricing
The cost depends on the diet and bag size. The team will tell you the price before you buy. A wellness exam starts at $99, and a sick exam starts at $135. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
Fear Free handling keeps checkups easy, which helps with the rechecks many diets need.
When eating changes can't wait
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet vomits again and again, can't keep water down, collapses or has a swollen belly. The Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida runs a 24-hour hospital in Oakland. For other medicines, see pet pharmacy and prescriptions in Lake Buena Vista.
