What is a pet ultrasound used for?
At most Petfolk visits, ultrasound is a quick, focused tool. Across Petfolk, nearly three in four ultrasound procedures (73%) were to guide a needle into the bladder for a clean urine sample, and about 1 in 8 (12%) were a quick focused scan of the belly or chest (Oct 1, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026).
Common reasons:
A clean urine sample for a bladder infection or crystal check
A quick belly or chest scan after an injury or for sudden weakness, to look for free fluid
The bladder, for stones, thickening or masses
Pregnancy checks
Follow-up of something seen on an x-ray
How is an ultrasound different from an x-ray?
An x-ray shows bones, lungs and dense objects like stones or metal. Ultrasound shows soft tissue and fluid, and it moves, so the vet can watch the bladder fill or look for fluid in the belly. The two often work together. See pet x-rays in Lake Buena Vista for what an x-ray adds.
Clean urine samples, explained
A free-catch sample from the yard or litter box can pick up bacteria from the skin or floor. A sample taken straight from the bladder is clean, so a culture shows only what's truly in the urine. With ultrasound, the vet can see the bladder and guide a small needle in. It sounds worse than it is. Most pets react about as much as they would to a vaccine.
This matters most for pets with bladder infections that keep coming back. A clean culture tells the vet which bacteria are there and which antibiotic will work, so your pet isn't put through round after round of the wrong medicine. Cats with litter box trouble, older dogs who leak urine, and pets who strain to pee are common reasons for this test.
What happens during the scan?
The vet explains what they want to see and why.
You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
Your pet lies on their back or side on a padded table. A small patch of fur may be shaved.
Warm gel goes on the skin, and the vet moves the probe over the area.
A focused scan or urine collection takes only a few minutes.
Most pets don't need sedation. Fear Free handling, a calm room and treats keep them relaxed. If your pet is in pain, the vet may suggest something to ease it.
How should I prepare?
For a bladder sample, try not to let your dog pee for an hour or two before the visit.
For a belly scan, the vet may ask you to hold food for a few hours.
Bring any recent lab results or x-rays from another vet.
If you're visiting from out of town, the team can send the findings to your vet at home.
Ultrasound pricing
The cost depends on the type of scan and what it's for. A sick or urgent exam starts at $135, and PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year.
When to skip the clinic
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if your pet has a swollen, tight belly with dry heaving, has collapsed, has pale gums, or can't pee at all, mostly a male cat. The Veterinary Emergency Clinic of Central Florida runs a 24-hour hospital in Oakland.
