Which surgeries are done at Petfolk Lake Buena Vista?

  • Lump and growth removal, with the tissue often sent to a lab to check what it is

  • Wound repair, such as stitching a deep cut or cleaning out an abscess

  • Spay and neuter

  • Other soft tissue surgery, decided case by case after an exam

Lumps are the most common reason. Across Petfolk, leaving out spays, neuters and dental work, more than a third of dog surgeries (38%) were to remove a lump or mass, and dogs made up about 7 in 10 surgery patients overall (Oct 1, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026).

Is anesthesia safe for my pet?

For most healthy pets, yes. The team lowers the risk by:

  • doing a full exam before the day of surgery

  • running blood work to check the kidneys, liver and blood count

  • placing an IV line for fluids and medicine when the vet advises it

  • watching heart rate, breathing, oxygen and temperature the whole time

  • keeping your pet warm and watched as they wake up

Older pets and pets with health problems can still have surgery. The vet may suggest extra tests first. See pet blood work and lab testing in Lake Buena Vista for what those tests check.

Surgery day, step by step

  1. The night before: no food after the time the team gives you. Water is usually fine.

  2. Drop-off in the morning: the team checks your pet, answers questions and has you sign the plan.

  3. Surgery: the vet operates while a team member monitors anesthesia.

  4. Recovery: your pet wakes up in a quiet, warm space.

  5. Pickup: the team goes over home care, medicine and the recheck date.

You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. Fear Free handling, and pre-visit calming medicine when the vet thinks it helps, make drop-off easier for anxious pets.

How do I care for my pet after surgery?

  • Keep the cone on until the vet says it can come off.

  • Limit activity: short leash walks only, no running, jumping or stairs if you can help it.

  • Check the incision daily for redness, swelling or discharge.

  • Give pain medicine and any antibiotics exactly as directed.

  • Keep the incision dry. No baths or swimming until the stitches are out or the vet clears it.

Most pets are back to normal in about two weeks. Call the clinic if your pet won't eat, seems very tired the next day, or the incision opens.

A new lump deserves a look

Most lumps are harmless, but some aren't, and you can't tell by feel. If you find a new lump, or one that grows or changes, book a visit. The vet can take a small needle sample during the exam to help decide whether it should come off.

Surgery pricing

The cost depends on the surgery, your pet's size and the tests needed first. You'll get a written estimate before surgery day. PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year.

Signs after surgery that can't wait
