Is the rabies vaccine required in Fulton County?
Yes. Grant Park is in Fulton County. The county's licensing program says anyone with a dog, cat or ferret 4 months or older in Fulton County must have the pet vaccinated against rabies every one or three years and buy a license. The license term must match the rabies vaccine term. Learn more on the Fulton County licensing page.
The county asks for a vaccination certificate signed by a licensed vet. An invoice is not enough. Petfolk Grant Park gives you that certificate after the shot.
How often does my pet need a rabies shot?
The first rabies vaccine is good for one year. After that, many dogs and cats get a vaccine that lasts three years. The vet will tell you which one your pet got and when the next is due. If a booster is late, the next shot may only count for one year, so keep your reminder handy.
Puppies and kittens usually get their first rabies shot at about 12 to 16 weeks. See puppy vaccines and kitten vaccines for the full schedules.
Why does an indoor cat need a rabies shot?
Bats are a common way rabies reaches a house cat. A bat can get into an attic or through a torn window screen, and cats love to chase them. A cat who slips out the door can also meet a raccoon or a stray. Rabies has no cure once signs start, and the rules treat an unvaccinated pet that may have been exposed very differently from a vaccinated one.
What to do if your pet meets a wild animal
If your pet was bitten or scratched by a raccoon, fox, bat or unknown animal:
Don't touch the wound with bare hands. Wear gloves.
Keep your pet away from other pets and people.
Call Petfolk Grant Park the same day and say it may be a rabies exposure.
Bring your pet's rabies certificate if you have it.
A vaccinated pet usually gets a booster shot right away. An unvaccinated pet may need a long period of confinement, so staying current saves real stress.
The rabies vaccine visit
The vet does a quick exam to make sure your pet is healthy enough for the shot. The shot takes a few seconds, given with treats and gentle, Fear Free handling. Many pets get rabies at the same visit as their other boosters.
Some pets are a bit tired or sore for a day. Call if you see face swelling, hives or vomiting.
Bring any past rabies certificates, even from another state. If your pet's last shot is still current, the vet can often give a booster that counts for three years. Without proof of the earlier shot, the new one usually counts for only one year.
What the rabies vaccine costs
A wellness exam starts at $99, and the rabies vaccine is priced on its own. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. A PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year and covers routine care like yearly exams and core vaccines under one fee.
Serious reactions
Severe reactions are rare. If your pet's face swells fast, they have trouble breathing or they collapse after a shot, go straight to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as MedVet Atlanta on Century Circle NE.
