Which vaccines does my cat need?
The core vaccines for every cat are:
FVRCP. It protects against feline herpesvirus, calicivirus and panleukopenia. The first two cause most cat colds. Panleukopenia is a severe virus that spreads easily and lasts a long time in the home.
Rabies. A bat that gets into the house, or a cat who slips out the door, is enough exposure. Rabies has no cure. See our rabies vaccine page.
The FeLV vaccine is core for kittens and suggested for adult cats who go outside or live with a cat who does.
Does an indoor cat really need shots?
Yes. Many Grant Park homes are older houses with porches, attics and screen doors, and cats find gaps; viruses can also ride in on your shoes or clothes. An indoor cat who has never been vaccinated has no protection if one slips through. The vet may space out boosters for a strictly indoor adult cat.
How often do adult cats get boosters?
After the kitten series and a booster at about one year, most adult cats get FVRCP every one to three years. Rabies boosters follow the label of the vaccine used. The vet will set a schedule and send you reminders. Starting young? See kitten vaccines in Grant Park.
A calmer trip for your cat
Most cats dislike the car more than the shot. These help:
Leave the carrier out at home for a few days with a soft towel inside.
Cover the carrier with a light cloth on the way.
Bring a treat your cat loves.
At the clinic, the team uses Fear Free handling. Your cat can stay in the bottom half of the carrier for much of the exam. The vet moves slowly, talks softly and gives the shot in a few seconds. Across Petfolk from October 2025 to June 2026, kittens got their first FVRCP with us at about 10 weeks old.
Porch cats and yard cats
Some cats in the neighborhood spend time on the porch or in the yard, and some community cats wander between homes. A cat who meets other cats outside has more risk of FeLV and of fights, and bite wounds can spread viruses. For these cats, the vet will likely suggest the FeLV vaccine and a yearly check of their skin, teeth and weight.
If you feed a stray who visits your porch, keep your own cat's vaccines current and wash your hands after handling the stray. Bring a new cat in for a checkup before it meets your other cats.
What to bring
Bring any past vaccine records, a list of food and medicine, and a towel that smells like home. If your cat is new to you, bring any shelter papers. They help the vet avoid repeating shots.
What cat vaccines cost
The wellness exam starts at $99, and each vaccine is priced on its own. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. PetfolkCare starts at $199 a year and covers routine care like yearly exams and core vaccines under one fee.
After the shot
Sleepy, and eating less for a day? Normal. A small, firm bump at the shot spot can last a few weeks. Call the clinic if a lump grows or is still there after a month.
If your cat's face swells, they vomit again and again, or they have trouble breathing, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital right away. MedVet Atlanta on Century Circle NE is one option.
