Which surgeries are done at Petfolk Grant Park?

Common procedures include:

  • Lump and mass removal: taking off a growth so it can be tested

  • Wound repair: closing a deep cut or bite that needs more than a quick fix

  • Spay and neuter: see spay and neuter for details

  • Abscess drainage: opening and flushing an infected pocket

  • Skin biopsy: a small sample of skin sent to a lab

  • Dental extractions: done as part of a dental cleaning

For bone surgery, such as a torn knee ligament or a broken leg, the vet will refer you to a surgical specialist and help with records.

Lumps are the most common reason for a dog's surgery, apart from spays, neuters and dental work. Across Petfolk from October 2025 to September 2026, 38% of those other dog surgeries were to remove a lump or mass. Dogs made up about 7 in 10 surgery patients overall.

Should every lump come off?

Not always. Many lumps on older dogs are harmless fatty growths. The vet can often check a lump first with a fine needle sample, a quick test where a thin needle pulls a few cells for the microscope. If a lump is growing, changing, red or bothering your pet, or the cells look worrying, the vet will likely suggest removing it and sending it to a lab. Measure new lumps and take a photo, so you can tell the vet how fast they change.

How is my pet kept safe under anesthesia?

Safety starts before the day. The vet does an exam and blood work to check the kidneys, liver and blood counts. On surgery day, pain medicine starts before the procedure and the team monitors your pet's breathing, heart rate and temperature. Ask the vet to walk you through the anesthesia plan for your pet. Older pets can have surgery too; the plan is just adjusted for them.

You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. For example, if a lump is bigger than expected, the team will call you before doing more.

Surgery day at the clinic

Plan on a morning drop-off at The Beacon. The team will give you a pickup time. The team will tell you when to stop food the night before. Water is usually fine. Fear Free trained staff keep pets calm with gentle handling, quiet spaces and, for very nervous pets, medicine at home before the visit.

When you pick up, the team goes over pain medicine, the cone, stitch care and what to watch for. You will also get a time for a recheck. Set up a quiet room or crate at home before pickup, with water, a soft bed and no stairs, so your pet can rest as soon as you get back.

The first two weeks at home

Keep your pet quiet: leash walks only, no running at South Bend or Walker Park, and no jumping on furniture. Check the cut every day. Some pinkness is normal. Keep the cone on, even when your pet looks sad, because licking is the top cause of opened stitches. Stitches or staples usually come out in 10 to 14 days.

If a lump was sent to the lab, results usually come back in about a week or two. The vet will call you with what it was and whether anything else is needed.

Problems after surgery

Call the clinic if the cut is red, swollen, leaking or opening, or if your pet won't eat the next day. Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if there is heavy bleeding, pale gums, a swollen belly, trouble breathing or your pet can't stand. MedVet Atlanta on Century Circle NE sees emergencies without an appointment.
