In-house lab tests for dogs and cats, with many results during the visit.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Grant Park is a vet in Grant Park, Atlanta, with an in-house lab for blood, urine and stool tests. Why would my pet need blood work?

Blood work shows what an exam can't. It tells the vet how the kidneys, liver and other organs are working, whether there is infection or anemia, and how blood sugar looks. The vet may suggest it:

  • At a senior checkup, to catch kidney or thyroid changes before your pet looks sick

  • Before anesthesia, so surgery or a dental cleaning is planned safely

  • When a pet is sick, with vomiting, weight loss, thirst or low energy

  • To check a long-term medicine, since some drugs need regular liver or kidney checks

  • As a baseline, so future results have a normal to compare against

Cats hide illness well, which is one reason blood work matters more as they age. Across Petfolk from October 2025 to September 2026, senior cats were about twice as likely as younger adult cats to get blood work at a wellness visit (34% versus 18%).

Which lab tests does Petfolk Grant Park run?

The most common tests are:

  • Complete blood count (CBC): red cells, white cells and platelets

  • Chemistry panel: kidney and liver values, blood sugar, protein and electrolytes

  • Urinalysis: kidney function, crystals, infection and sugar in the urine

  • Fecal test: worms and other gut parasites

  • Heartworm and tick-borne disease test: a quick blood test for dogs

  • Thyroid test: often for older cats who lose weight

The vet will tell you which tests fit your pet and what each one could find. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Does my pet need to fast first?

Sometimes. For a planned checkup, the team may ask you to skip breakfast so fat in the blood doesn't cloud the sample. Water is fine. For a sick visit, don't wait to fast: come in, and the vet will work with what you have. For a urine test, try not to let your pet pee right before the visit. For a stool test, bring a fresh sample from the last 12 hours.

Also bring a list of every medicine and supplement your pet takes, with doses. Some, like steroids or thyroid pills, change lab values, and the vet reads the results differently when they know. If your pet had blood work at another clinic, ask them to send it ahead, or bring a printout. Older results make it easier to see what has changed.

A quick, gentle blood draw

Most pets do well. The vet tech holds your pet gently, draws a small amount of blood from a leg or the neck, and it's over in about a minute. Fear Free handling, treats and a calm room help nervous pets. Cats can stay in the bottom of their carrier if that is where they feel safe.

Making sense of the results

The vet goes through each number that is high or low, says what it might mean and what happens next. One odd number does not always mean disease. Sometimes the next step is a recheck in a few weeks, sometimes x-rays or a change in diet. You get a copy of the results, and your pet's record keeps every test so trends are easy to spot.

Lab tests close to home

The clinic sits in The Beacon, a short drive from Ormewood Park, Summerhill and Chosewood Park. Older pets can get a yearly panel as part of senior care, puppies can get parasite tests at their shot visits, and sick pets can get same-day answers.

When a result means go now

If your pet is very weak, has pale gums, has stopped drinking or cannot stand, skip the lab visit and go to a 24-hour emergency hospital. MedVet Atlanta on Century Circle NE takes emergencies without an appointment.
