When is vomiting or diarrhea a 24-hour hospital problem?

Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital, such as VEG Katy on West Grand Parkway South, if your pet:

  • Retches without bringing anything up and has a swollen, hard belly.

  • Vomits blood, or passes a lot of blood in the stool.

  • Is weak, collapses or has very pale gums.

  • Is a male cat that is vomiting and straining to pee.

When should my pet come in today?

Book a same-day visit at Petfolk Fulshear if:

  • Vomiting or diarrhea lasts more than a day.

  • Your pet vomits more than two or three times in a few hours.

  • There is a little blood or mucus in the stool.

  • Your pet is a puppy, a kitten or a senior. Small and older pets dry out faster.

  • Your pet will not eat, or seems tired or sore.

  • You think your pet ate something it shouldn't have. Our pet poisoning treatment page explains what to do first.

At our Houston-area clinics, about 1 in 5 of these visits are for puppies or kittens under a year old, and about 1 in 4 are for cats (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026).

What will the vet do?

The vet asks what your pet ate, when the problem started and what the vomit or stool looks like. Then comes a nose-to-tail exam, done gently with Fear Free handling. Depending on what the vet finds, the plan may include:

  • A fecal test for worms and other parasites.

  • Blood work to check hydration and organ function.

  • X-rays if the vet suspects a swallowed object.

  • Anti-nausea medicine, a bland diet and fluids.

At our Houston-area clinics, about 1 in 3 vomiting or diarrhea visits include fluid therapy (Oct 2025 to Sep 2026). Fluids replace the water a sick pet loses and help the body recover.

They helped me with my pups stomach problems, and were so kind.

What does a visit for vomiting or diarrhea cost?

An urgent exam at Petfolk Fulshear starts at $135. Tests, fluids and medicine are priced separately. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year and includes a 24/7 care team by chat, which helps when you are asking yourself whether a symptom is normal.

New pets and food changes

Did you just bring home a dog or cat from Fort Bend County Animal Services in Rosenberg, or a new puppy from a breeder? A new home and a sudden switch in food often cause loose stool in the first week. Mix the old food with the new over several days. Bring a stool sample to the first visit so the vet can check for parasites.

Rain, puddles and summer heat

Texas A&M's diagnostic lab notes that wet weather raises the risk of leptospirosis, a germ spread through water and soil, even for dogs that only use parks, trails or the backyard. It can cause vomiting, so mention any time your dog spent near standing water after a storm.

Heat can upset a dog's stomach too. After Hurricane Beryl in July 2024, heat indices in the Houston area stayed at 100 to 106°F for several days. A dog that vomits or has diarrhea after time outside in that kind of heat needs to be seen the same day.
