Why the Smell Means It's Been a While
Periodontal disease starts with plaque, hardens to tartar, and from there inflames the gum tissue. That's the smell, and by the time it's strong enough to notice, the disease is generally past the reversible stage — there's already bone loss, pockets have formed, and some teeth are moving. The surface is what scales off during a professional clean. The disease is underneath it.
