What is prescription pet food?

Prescription food is a diet made for a medical need. It differs from store food in what goes in and how much. A kidney diet has less phosphorus, a bladder diet changes the urine to help dissolve some stones, and an allergy diet uses proteins broken down so small the body doesn't react to them. You can only buy these foods with a vet's approval, because the wrong one can cause harm.

Which pets need a prescription diet?

The vets at Petfolk Wake Forest use these diets for many reasons:

  • Vomiting, diarrhea or a sensitive stomach

  • Healing after surgery or a long illness

  • Food allergies that cause itchy skin or ear infections

  • Bladder crystals or some kinds of stones

  • Kidney disease in older cats and dogs

  • Weight loss for a pet with too much weight on the joints

  • Diabetes, especially in cats

Stomach diets lead the list by far. Across Petfolk, 84% of the prescription diets sent home from October 2025 to September 2026 were gastrointestinal (GI) diets for upset stomachs. About 1 in 10 orders (11%) was a recovery diet for pets healing from illness or surgery.

The staff's attention to detail and kindness really stood out, from their gentle handling of Pixie to their clear instructions for her medications and diet.

How long will my pet need a special diet?

It depends on the reason. A GI diet after a bout of diarrhea may only be needed for a week or two, then you slowly go back to the usual food. A recovery diet is often short too. Diets for kidney disease, bladder stones or allergies are often long-term, sometimes lifelong, with rechecks to see how your pet is doing.

The vet will give you a plan with a recheck date. Don't stop a long-term diet on your own, even if your pet looks great. The diet is often why they look great.

How do I switch my pet to the new food?

Unless the vet says to switch right away, mix the foods over about a week:

  • Days 1 to 2: one quarter new food, three quarters old

  • Days 3 to 4: half and half

  • Days 5 to 6: three quarters new

  • Day 7: all new food

For an allergy diet, the trial only works if your pet eats nothing else. That means no table scraps, flavored chews or treats outside the plan. Ask the team which treats fit the diet.

Getting the food

Ask the team at your visit how to get the diet your pet needs, whether at the clinic or through an online pet pharmacy that checks with the vet. Many diets come in both wet and dry forms. If your pet doesn't like the taste, call. There is often another brand or form with the same purpose.

Cost

Diet prices depend on the brand, the form and your pet's size. The exam that starts the plan is a wellness exam, which starts at $99, or a sick exam, which starts at $135. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Fear Free handling is part of the weigh-ins and rechecks, with treats that fit the diet.

When a diet can't wait

If your pet stops eating for more than a day, keeps vomiting, or a male cat strains in the litter box with little or no urine, don't wait for a diet recheck. Call the clinic, or go to a 24-hour hospital such as BluePearl Pet Hospital on Paragon Park Road in Raleigh if it is closed.
