What surgeries are done at Petfolk Wake Forest?

Petfolk Wake Forest handles soft tissue surgery, which means surgery on skin, muscle and organs rather than bones. Common reasons pets have surgery here:

  • Removing a lump, cyst or skin growth

  • Closing a deep cut, a torn dewclaw or a bite wound

  • Draining and cleaning an abscess

  • Spaying or neutering

  • Taking a small sample of tissue (a biopsy) to send to a lab

Lumps are a big part of this work. Across Petfolk, when spays, neuters and dental work are left out, more than a third of dog surgeries (38%) were to remove a lump or mass, from October 2025 to September 2026. About 7 in 10 surgery patients across Petfolk in that year were dogs.

Bone surgery, such as a torn knee ligament or a broken leg, needs a specialist. If your pet needs that, the vet will explain why and help you set up a referral.

How do I get my pet ready for surgery?

Most pets need no food after midnight the night before. Water is usually fine. The team will give you exact steps when you book, and they may differ for puppies, kittens or pets with diabetes.

Before anesthesia, the vet checks blood work to make sure the liver and kidneys can handle it. This can often be run in the in-house lab on the same morning. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Bring a list of any medicines or supplements your pet takes, and tell the team if your pet has had a reaction to anesthesia before.

They performed her surgery the same day with incredible compassion and support.

On the day of surgery

Drop-off is in the morning. You sign the plan then. A team member places an IV line, and the vet gives medicine for pain before the surgery starts. During anesthesia, a team member watches heart rate, breathing and oxygen from start to finish.

Fear Free handling is used from drop-off to pickup. That means a quiet space, a gentle hold, and a warm blanket while your pet wakes up. You'll get a call when surgery is done and a pickup time later the same day.

What is recovery like at home?

Most pets go home the same day. Plan on 10 to 14 days of quiet time for a skin incision. Keep your dog on a short leash for potty breaks, and skip runs, jumping and swimming until the vet says it is healed.

A cone or a soft recovery suit stops licking, which is the most common reason an incision opens. Check the incision once a day. A little pink is normal. Swelling, redness that spreads, a bad smell or any opening is a reason to call.

The greenways near Heritage, like Smith Creek, are tempting in good weather. Save those walks, and the off-leash time at Flaherty Dog Park, for after the recheck.

Paying for surgery

The cost of surgery depends on the procedure, your pet's size and how long anesthesia lasts, so the team builds a written estimate after the exam. Petfolk accepts major credit cards and Apple Pay, and CareCredit financing is available. Most pet insurance plans can use the detailed invoice for a claim.

If something seems wrong after surgery

Call the clinic during open hours if the incision looks off or your pet is not eating. If your pet collapses, has pale gums, is breathing hard or is bleeding through the bandage when the clinic is closed, go to a 24-hour hospital such as BluePearl Pet Hospital on Paragon Park Road in Raleigh.
