What is making my pet so itchy?

Most itchy pets have one of four causes: fleas, allergies, an infection, or mites. Often two of them stack up. An allergy makes the skin raw, then bacteria or yeast move in, and the itch gets worse.

Signs worth a visit:

  • Licking or chewing the paws, belly or legs

  • A wet, red, raw patch that showed up in a few hours (a hot spot)

  • Bumps, scabs or flaky skin

  • Thinning fur or bald patches

  • A greasy coat or a strong smell

  • Scratching that wakes you up

I received an urgent care, same-day appointment to treat my dog’s rash.

What the vet checks

The vet starts with a nose-to-tail look at the skin, the coat, the ears and the paws, and asks about food, flea prevention and when the itch started.

Then, if needed, a quick test at the visit. At Petfolk's Houston-area clinics, about 1 in 4 itchy-skin visits (25%) included a skin cytology, a microscope check of the skin's surface for bacteria and yeast, from October 2025 through September 2026. If the first tests don't explain the itch, the vet tells you what could come next. The first tests take minutes and help the vet pick a treatment that works the first time.

Itchy pets can be sore pets. The team uses Fear Free, gentle handling, and treats and breaks are part of the visit.

How is a skin problem treated?

Treatment depends on the cause, and most pets get help on two fronts:

  1. Relief now. Itch medicine, a medicated shampoo, or a cream for a hot spot.

  2. The cause. An antibiotic or antifungal for infection, flea control, or a plan to find a food or environmental allergy.

At Petfolk's Houston-area clinics, about 3 in 10 itchy-skin visits (30%) included an antibiotic. Most medicine comes from the on-site pharmacy, so you leave with it in hand. If the itch keeps returning, the next step is often allergy testing and treatment in Vintage Park.

Fall pollen and fire ants

The Houston Health Department tracks cedar elm pollen in September and October, the fall tree season. Pets with environmental allergies often flare then. Fire ants are another local cause of red, itchy bumps: Texas A&M says they infest more than the eastern two-thirds of Texas, and dogs that nose through yards find them fast.

What does skin care cost in Vintage Park?

A skin visit is a sick exam, which starts at $135 at Petfolk Vintage Park. Skin tests and medicine are added only after you agree. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

Before your visit

  • Don't bathe your pet for a day or two before, so the vet can see the skin as it is.

  • Bring photos if the rash comes and goes.

  • Know the name of your pet's food and flea prevention.

Facial swelling, hives all over the body, or trouble breathing after a sting or new medicine can't wait. Call right away, or go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as BluePearl Pet Hospital on Spring Cypress Rd in Spring.
