Is this a job for a 24-hour emergency hospital?

Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital right away if your pet was hit by a car, is bleeding heavily through a towel, has a wound in the chest or belly, can't stand, or is breathing hard. Petfolk Vintage Park is a primary and urgent care clinic, not an emergency hospital. BluePearl Pet Hospital at 1646 Spring Cypress Rd in Spring runs a 24-hour emergency service and asks you to call before you go.

For everything else, such as a cut paw, a bite from another dog, a torn nail or a new limp, the team at Petfolk Vintage Park can usually help today.

What should I do before we get there?

Do three things: protect yourself, slow any bleeding, and keep your pet still.

  1. A hurt pet may snap, even a gentle one. Approach slowly and keep your face back.

  2. Press a clean towel or gauze firmly on a bleeding wound for several minutes. Don't keep lifting it to look.

  3. Carry a small pet in a carrier. Use a blanket as a stretcher for a big dog who won't walk.

  4. Skip the hydrogen peroxide and creams. The vet cleans the wound properly.

He had managed to slice right above his paw (his ankle I guess?) open on a window that he tried to go through because a cat was taunting him.

How the vet treats a wound

The vet checks how deep the wound goes, whether it reaches muscle or tendon, and whether there's dirt or hair inside. Then, depending on the wound:

  • Clipping and flushing it clean

  • Closing it with stitches, sometimes with sedation so your pet stays still and comfortable

  • A bandage or a light wrap, and a cone so your pet leaves it alone

  • Pain relief and, for bites, often an antibiotic

Medicine is part of most visits. At Petfolk's Houston-area clinics, about 4 in 5 wound and injury visits (80%) included a prescription medicine, from October 2025 through September 2026. The typical pet seen for a wound or injury was about 5 and a half years old. Many pets go home with medicine from the on-site pharmacy.

Fear Free, gentle handling matters most when a pet is hurting. The team moves slowly, uses treats when they help, and tells you what's next.

Why do bite wounds need a vet even when they look small?

A dog's or cat's tooth makes a deep puncture that closes on top and traps bacteria underneath. A few days later it can swell into an abscess. Cat bites are especially quick to do this. A same-day clean-out and an antibiotic usually stop it early.

If your pet bit a person in the scuffle, Texas requires a dog or cat that bites a person to be quarantined for 10 days, whatever its vaccine status. The team can tell you what to expect.

Injuries we see around northwest Houston

  • Hot pavement burns. Texas A&M vets say that if the pavement is too hot for your hand, it's too hot for paws.

  • Fire ant stings. Fire ants infest more than the eastern two-thirds of Texas, and dogs nosing through yards find them.

  • Trail scrapes and torn nails. Meyer Park on Cypresswood Dr has nearly four miles of trails. Harris County Precinct 4 dog parks ask for a leash 6 feet or shorter, which also helps avoid scuffles.

What does wound care cost?

A wound visit is a sick or urgent exam, which starts at $135 at Petfolk Vintage Park. Cleaning, stitches, sedation and medicine are added based on the wound. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.
