What does a wellness exam at Petfolk Sugar Land cover?

A Petfolk Sugar Land wellness exam checks your pet from nose to tail:

  • weight and body condition

  • eyes, ears, mouth and teeth

  • heart and lungs

  • belly, lymph nodes, skin and coat

  • joints and how your pet moves

The doctor also reviews vaccines, heartworm, flea and tick prevention, and any lab work that makes sense for your pet's age. Nothing is added without your OK. At Petfolk Sugar Land, three in four wellness visits (75%) included at least one vaccine (December 18, 2025, to October 19, 2026).

How often does my pet need a wellness exam?

Most healthy adult dogs and cats need a wellness exam once a year at Petfolk Sugar Land. The usual schedule:

1. Puppies and kittens: every few weeks during the vaccine series. 2. Healthy adults: once a year. 3. Seniors and pets with ongoing conditions: often twice a year.

The yearly visit is also when dogs get their heartworm test. The American Heartworm Society's "Think 12" guidance recommends testing every 12 months and giving prevention 12 months a year. That matters here: Texas led the US in heartworm incidence in the American Heartworm Society's April 2026 map.

Who comes to Petfolk Sugar Land for checkups?

Many Petfolk Sugar Land wellness patients are new to the clinic or new to the family. From the clinic's opening on December 18, 2025, to October 19, 2026:

  • Nearly two in three wellness visits (64%) were a pet's very first visit with Petfolk.

  • Four in ten (42%) were for puppies and kittens under a year old.

Older pets come in too. At Petfolk's five Houston-area clinics (Sugar Land, Pearland, Vintage Park, Fulshear and Missouri City), about 1 in 5 wellness patients (21%) were 7 or older, and about half of wellness visits (48%) were booked no more than a day ahead (October 2025 to September 2026).

What should I bring to my pet's first visit in Sugar Land?

A first visit at Petfolk Sugar Land goes faster with your pet's history. Bring:

  • vaccine records, including the rabies certificate. Texas requires dogs and cats to stay current on rabies, and the City of Sugar Land asks residents to keep the certificate on file

  • heartworm test dates and the prevention your pet takes

  • any lab work, X-rays or ongoing medications

  • your previous clinic's name and phone number

  • a fresh stool sample, if you can, so the team can check for intestinal parasites

How can I make the visit easier on my pet?

At Petfolk Sugar Land, you go straight to an exam room and can stay with your pet the whole time. Bring a favorite treat, use a carrier your cat already knows, and tell the team if your pet gets nervous so they can slow down.

How much does a wellness exam cost at Petfolk Sugar Land?

At Petfolk Sugar Land, a wellness exam starts at $99 or is included with PetfolkCare. Vaccines, tests and preventives are priced separately, and you see each one before it's added. PetfolkCare starts at $199 a year and takes 10% off vaccines, labs and preventives.

What if my pet seems sick when the checkup is due?

A wellness exam is for a pet that seems healthy, so book a sick or urgent visit at Petfolk Sugar Land instead if your pet is vomiting, limping, not eating or acting off.

Go straight to a 24-hour emergency hospital for trouble breathing, collapse, a seizure, or a swollen belly with retching that brings nothing up. Petfolk Sugar Land is open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and doesn't provide overnight care.
