Puppy Vaccines in Sugar Land, TX, From Your Local Vet

Veterinarian giving a puppy a vaccine on an exam table

Most puppies need three or four vaccine visits, 2 to 4 weeks apart, from about 8 weeks old until after 16 weeks, then a booster at about 1 year. Texas law requires a rabies vaccine by 16 weeks of age. Petfolk Sugar Land is a vet in Sugar Land, Texas, near First Colony; our Sugar Land clinic sets your puppy's schedule at the first visit.

Started shots with a breeder or rescue? We usually continue the series rather than restart it.

What happens at each puppy vaccine visit?

At Petfolk Sugar Land, puppies get a distemper-parvo booster every 2 to 4 weeks until they are older than 16 weeks, as the AAHA canine vaccination guidelines advise.

1. About 8 weeks. First DA2PP shot (distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza and parvovirus). The doctor does a full exam, often tests a stool sample for worms, and starts heartworm prevention. Bring breeder or shelter records. 2. About 12 weeks. Second DA2PP and first leptospirosis dose. Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection spread in animal urine; AAHA now lists leptospirosis as a core vaccine. Kennel cough (Bordetella) or canine influenza is added for boarding, daycare or classes. Ask which lifestyle vaccines fit your plans. 3. At 16 weeks or a little after. Final DA2PP and second leptospirosis dose, with rabies by 16 weeks, as Texas law requires. You leave with an official Texas rabies certificate. Ask whether the series is complete and when the next booster is due. 4. About 1 year. Boosters for distemper-parvo, leptospirosis and rabies.

The American Kennel Club's puppy shot guide shows a similar timeline.

What puppy health risks are common around Sugar Land and Houston?

The three puppy risks Petfolk Sugar Land plans around are heartworm, leptospirosis after rain and parvovirus.

  • Heartworm. Texas led the US in heartworm incidence in the American Heartworm Society's April 2026 map. The society advises starting prevention by 8 weeks. At Petfolk Sugar Land, 74% of puppy wellness visits sent heartworm, flea and tick prevention home (December 2025 to October 2026).

  • Leptospirosis. Wet conditions raise exposure, even for city dogs in wet yards and parks (Texas A&M diagnostic lab, 2024). After heavy rain in Fort Bend County, keep your puppy away from puddles.

  • Parvovirus. Parvo spreads through infected stool and can live in the environment for months (Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine). A partly vaccinated puppy can still catch it.

How do Houston-area puppies move through the series at Petfolk?

At Petfolk's five Houston-area clinics (Sugar Land, Pearland, Vintage Park, Fulshear and Missouri City), puppies who started their series between October 2025 and June 2026 (followed through October 2026) got their first shot at a median age of about 10½ weeks.

  • 76% came back for at least a second distemper-parvo booster.

  • 47% got their final booster with us at 16 weeks or older, so book that last visit early.

  • 72% also got rabies, and 68% a kennel cough vaccine, with us.

  • 26% got canine influenza, compared with 9% at Petfolk clinics outside Houston.

Where can a puppy go in Sugar Land before the series is done?

Until the Petfolk Sugar Land doctor says the series is complete, avoid ground that many unknown dogs use.

  • Pawm Springs Dog Park in Sugar Land Memorial Park doesn't admit dogs younger than four months, and handlers must carry a copy of the rabies certificate (City of Sugar Land park rules).

  • Your own yard is fine if no sick dogs have been there.

  • In public, carry your puppy, and play only with healthy, vaccinated dogs you know.

  • Puppy classes can start at 7 to 8 weeks, with one set of vaccines at least 7 days before (American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior).

Does Sugar Land require a pet license?

The City of Sugar Land has no pet license or registration program, but residents should keep the rabies certificate on file to show an animal services officer (City of Sugar Land FAQ). Outside city limits, ask Fort Bend County Animal Services about its license rule.

What if my puppy misses a booster?

Call Petfolk Sugar Land at (346) 436-6295. A short delay usually means picking up where you left off; a long gap may mean repeating part of the series.

How much do puppy vaccines cost at Petfolk Sugar Land?

At Petfolk Sugar Land, puppy vaccines are given at a wellness exam that starts at $99 (or is included with PetfolkCare), and each vaccine is priced separately on top. You'll see the total before anything is given. PetfolkCare starts at $199 a year, takes 10% off vaccines, labs and preventives, and includes $200 toward a spay or neuter.

What should I do if my puppy seems sick?

Mild tiredness for a day after shots is common. If your puppy seems off or unwell on vaccine day, call Petfolk Sugar Land before you come in.

Go straight to a 24-hour emergency hospital for vomiting or bloody diarrhea in a puppy that isn't fully vaccinated, which can be parvovirus, or for face swelling, hives or collapse after a vaccine. Petfolk Sugar Land is open on weekends, weekday hours vary, and it doesn't provide overnight care.
