Signs Your Pet May Need Blood Work
Blood work isn't just for pets who seem sick. A puppy or kitten getting their first full round of vaccinations often gets baseline blood work at the same visit. An older dog or cat due for their annual wellness exam usually gets blood work too, since organ function and hydration levels can shift quietly with age. Before any surgery, blood work checks that your pet's liver and kidneys can process anesthesia safely.
New signs can also prompt a vet to recommend blood work sooner: drinking more water than usual, eating less or suddenly eating a lot more, low energy that doesn't bounce back after a day or two, or vomiting or loose stool that sticks around.
The Blood Draw, Start to Finish
Our care team uses Fear Free handling, so blood draws don't turn into a wrestling match. A vet tech checks your pet's weight and vitals first, then draws the sample, usually from a front leg. It takes just a couple of minutes for most pets. Once drawn, it goes to our in-house reference lab, and some results come back the same day, right there during your visit.
