What first aid should I give on the way in?

Can I treat a small scrape at home?

Often, yes. A shallow scrape that has stopped bleeding, doesn't gape and isn't from a bite can usually be cleaned with mild soap and water and watched. A torn nail that has stopped bleeding may only need to be kept clean.

What Texas rabies rules apply after a bite?

Texas requires a dog or cat that bites a person to be quarantined for 10 days, whatever its vaccination status (25 Tex. Admin. Code §169.27). Texas also requires dogs and cats to have a rabies vaccine by 16 weeks of age and stay current (25 Tex. Admin. Code §169.29).
