Petfolk SouthPark fills prescriptions for dogs and cats it has examined, so most pets start their medicine the same day as the visit, and the clinic also carries prescription pet food. Refills are approved by the doctor once your pet has been seen recently enough. Petfolk SouthPark is a veterinary clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina; ask our vet in SouthPark about any medicine your pet needs.

Can I pick up my pet's medicine at Petfolk SouthPark?
Yes. When the Petfolk SouthPark doctor prescribes a medicine during a visit, the team can often send it home with you before you leave. Each label shows your pet's name, the drug, the strength, how much to give and how often. Read it before you get in the car and ask about anything unclear.
Why does the vet need to see my pet before prescribing?
North Carolina law ties prescribing to a veterinarian-client-patient relationship, which includes the veterinarian having recently seen the animal through an exam or timely visits, and being available for follow-up if a treatment causes a reaction or doesn't work (N.C. G.S. 90-181). The AVMA uses the same idea. A medicine safe for one pet can be risky for another with kidney disease, liver changes or a heart condition, and pets on long-term medicine need periodic exams and sometimes lab work to keep the dose right. The blood work page explains those tests.
Can I fill my pet's prescription at another pharmacy?
Usually, yes; ask the Petfolk SouthPark team for a written prescription. A few cautions:
Human pharmacies can fill many pet prescriptions, but some flavored liquid medicines for people contain xylitol, a sweetener that is toxic to dogs. Ask the pharmacist to check.
Online pet pharmacies vary. The FDA advises buying only from licensed pharmacies that require a valid prescription.
Doses for pets differ from doses for people. Never swap in your own medicine, even the same drug.
How do refills work at Petfolk SouthPark?
Ask early. Call or message a few days before the bottle runs out.
Doctor review. The doctor checks when your pet was last seen and how the medicine is working.
Recheck if needed. For long-term medicines (thyroid, heart, arthritis, seizure control), a recheck exam or lab work may come first. That's a safety step, not paperwork.
Pick up. Collect the refill at 4914 Old Sardis Rd, Unit C5.
What if my pet won't take pills?
Hide the pill in a small piece of soft food, then give a second piece with no pill right after.
Use pill pockets or a dab of plain canned food.
For cats, ask whether the medicine comes as a liquid or chewable, or whether a compounding pharmacy can make a flavored version.
Ask the team to show you how to place a pill at the back of the tongue.
Never crush a pill or open a capsule unless the doctor says it's safe; some are coated for a reason.
What about prescription diets?
Some conditions, such as kidney disease, urinary crystals and food allergies, are managed partly through food. Prescription diets are sold only with a vet's approval. Switch gradually over about a week, mixing old and new, unless the Petfolk SouthPark doctor says otherwise.
How should I store pet medicine?
Keep medicines in their original labeled containers, away from heat and out of reach; dogs will chew through a pill bottle left on a nightstand. Store pet and human medicines apart so they don't get mixed up.
How much do prescriptions cost at Petfolk SouthPark?
At Petfolk SouthPark, each medicine is priced by drug, strength and quantity, and you'll see the cost before you take it home. A new prescription usually follows an exam, such as a wellness exam that starts at $99 (or is included with a PetfolkCare plan).
What if my pet swallows the wrong medicine?
If your pet swallows someone's medicine or gets a double dose and seems wobbly, very sleepy, agitated or is vomiting, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital and bring the container. If your pet seems fine, call your vet or an animal poison control line right away. Petfolk SouthPark is open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, with no overnight care.
