Sick Pet Visits in SouthPark, Charlotte, From Your Local Vet

When your dog or cat just isn't right, here is what we look at and why.

Eating less, hiding, vomiting, limping or scratching for more than a day, or several changes at once, is a reason to book a sick visit for your dog or cat.

Go straight to a 24-hour emergency hospital for trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, a swollen belly with unproductive retching, a male cat straining with no urine, or heavy bleeding.

What are the most common reasons for a sick visit at Petfolk SouthPark?

Skin and growth concerns lead the list at Petfolk SouthPark, at 23% of sick visits, followed by vomiting or diarrhea (17%), ear problems (11%) and urinary problems (10%), from October 2025 to September 2026. In the same window, about 4 in 10 Petfolk SouthPark sick visits (43%) included lab work, and about a third (34%) happened on a Saturday or Sunday.

Which signs are worth a sick visit?

Book an exam at Petfolk SouthPark if your dog or cat has any of these for more than a day, or more than one at once:

  • Eating less, or turning down favorite treats

  • Drinking or peeing much more than usual

  • Low energy, hiding, or not wanting to walk

  • Coughing, sneezing, or a runny nose or eyes

  • Limping or stiffness that doesn't ease

  • Scratching, head shaking or a bad smell from the ears

  • Straining in the litter box or accidents in the house

  • New lumps, weight loss or bad breath

Tick-borne disease is one reason a vague, tired dog gets tested: in 2025, about 1 in 100 dogs tested in Mecklenburg County were positive for ehrlichiosis (1.04%, CAPC data).

What does the vet check at a sick visit?

The Petfolk SouthPark vet works through the same steps each time:

  1. The story: when it started, whether it has changed, and what your pet ate or chewed.

  2. Weight and vital signs. A small weight drop or mild fever says a lot, especially in cats.

  3. Hydration and gum color.

  4. A hands-on exam of eyes, ears, mouth, lymph nodes, belly, joints and skin.

  5. Heart and lungs, for murmurs, irregular rhythms or crackles.

  6. Tests only when they will change the plan, such as a fecal test, blood work, a urine sample or x-rays, with an estimate first.

  7. A plan you understand: what is likely going on, what to give, and what would mean calling back.

How do I prepare for a sick visit?

Note when symptoms started, take a short video of a cough, limp or odd breathing, and bring a fresh stool sample for stomach trouble plus a list of medicines. The vomiting and diarrhea page explains what to watch, and the American Veterinary Medical Association keeps plain-language pet health guides.
