Most adult cats need two vaccines, rabies and FVRCP, and a third, feline leukemia (FeLV), depends on whether your cat goes outside or meets other cats. North Carolina law requires every cat over four months old to have a current rabies vaccine (N.C. G.S. 130A-185). Petfolk SouthPark is a veterinary clinic in Charlotte, North Carolina, on Old Sardis Road; our vet in SouthPark checks your cat's record and gives only the shots your cat's life calls for.
This page is for grown cats. For a new kitten, the kitten vaccines page covers the first-year series.

Which vaccines does an adult cat need?
At Petfolk SouthPark, the core vaccines for an adult cat are rabies and FVRCP; FeLV is added when a cat has contact with other cats.
Rabies. A virus spread by bites from bats, raccoons, foxes and other mammals. It cannot be cured once signs appear. Required by North Carolina law for cats over four months old.
FVRCP. Covers feline viral rhinotracheitis and calicivirus (two common causes of cat colds and mouth sores) and panleukopenia, also called feline distemper, a severe virus of the gut and bone marrow. Recommended for every cat.
FeLV. Feline leukemia virus spreads through close contact, such as mutual grooming, shared bowls and fights. Usually advised for kittens, and for adult cats who go outside, board or live with new cats.
The American Association of Feline Practitioners, through its site for pet parents at catvets.com, groups rabies and FVRCP as the vaccines nearly every cat should have.
What do SouthPark cats usually get at a vaccine visit?
Across cat vaccine visits at Petfolk SouthPark from October 2025 to September 2026:
62% included FVRCP, and 27% included feline leukemia (FeLV).
66% included rabies, and 93% of those cats got the PureVax recombinant rabies vaccine, a non-adjuvanted vaccine made for cats.
These shares come from Petfolk's own records for SouthPark. Not every cat needs every vaccine every year, which is why the shares differ.
Do indoor cats in Charlotte still need rabies shots?
Yes. North Carolina requires rabies vaccination for all cats over four months old, indoor or not, and the North Carolina Division of Public Health says the cat is the domestic animal most often found with rabies in the state, partly because outdoor cats hunt wildlife (NC DPH rabies control). A bat can also get in through a chimney or attic vent. FVRCP viruses can ride in on shoes, and panleukopenia can survive in the environment for long stretches, so an indoor cat doesn't need to meet another cat to be exposed.
How often are cat vaccines due?
At Petfolk SouthPark, the due date for each vaccine comes from the product your cat received and your cat's risk, so the doctor reads it from the record.
Rabies. Every one or three years after the first booster, depending on the vaccine label printed on the certificate. The rabies vaccine page explains North Carolina's booster rule.
FVRCP. After the kitten series and 1-year booster, often every 3 years for adults.
FeLV. Yearly, if your cat still goes outside or meets new cats.
A cat adopted as an adult with no records usually gets a short restart series.
What rules apply to cats in Charlotte?
Two local rules touch cat parents near SouthPark.
The rabies tag. North Carolina's rabies tag law, G.S. 130A-190, says cats wear their rabies tag unless a local ordinance exempts them. A breakaway collar keeps the tag on safely. The rabies vaccine page covers the shot itself.
The yearly pet license. Cats four months or older in Charlotte or unincorporated Mecklenburg County must be licensed every year, with proof of a current rabies vaccine. Keep the rabies certificate from your visit.
What happens at a cat vaccine visit at Petfolk SouthPark?
A Petfolk SouthPark doctor examines your cat before any vaccine, because a cat with a fever or a cold should usually wait.
Check in to a private exam room. Bring your cat in a hard carrier with a towel that smells like home.
Exam. The team uses Gentle Handling: cats are often examined in the bottom half of the carrier, with towels and slow movements.
Vaccine plan. The doctor goes over your cat's record and lifestyle and recommends which shots are due.
Vaccines and records. You leave with a rabies certificate and the dates for each next dose.
How much do cat vaccines cost at Petfolk SouthPark?
At Petfolk SouthPark, cat vaccines are given at a wellness exam that starts at $99 (or is included with a PetfolkCare plan), and each vaccine is priced on top. You'll see the total before anything is given.
When is a reaction after a cat's shots an emergency?
A quiet, sleepy day and a slightly tender spot are normal after vaccines. Call Petfolk SouthPark if a lump at the injection site is still there after three weeks or keeps growing.
Go to a 24-hour emergency hospital if, within hours of a vaccine, your cat vomits repeatedly, has facial swelling, collapses or breathes with an open mouth. Cats rarely pant, so open-mouth breathing needs a vet right away. Petfolk SouthPark is open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and doesn't provide overnight care.
