Spay & Neuter in SouthPark, Charlotte, From Your Local Vet

Spay versus neuter, timing by species and size, and what recovery takes, compared.

Cats are usually spayed or neutered at around 5 to 7 months, small and medium dogs around 6 months, and large and giant breeds often later, after growth slows, but the right age depends on your pet's size, breed and health. Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - SouthPark is a veterinary clinic on Old Sardis Road in Charlotte, North Carolina, that performs spay and neuter surgery for dogs and cats in its own surgical suite, with anesthesia monitoring throughout.

The vet talks through timing with you first, and you get an estimate before the procedure.

What is the difference between a spay and a neuter?

A spay removes a female's ovaries and usually the uterus, and a neuter removes a male's testicles.

  • Spay (female): abdominal surgery through a small incision in the middle of the belly, so a bit more involved. It ends heat cycles and unplanned litters, removes the risk of pyometra (a serious uterine infection), and lowers the risk of mammary tumors when done early.

  • Neuter (male): usually shorter, with the incision in front of the scrotum in dogs or on the scrotum in cats, and no abdominal opening unless a testicle has not dropped. It removes the risk of testicular cancer and often reduces roaming and marking.

A testicle that never dropped into the scrotum (cryptorchidism) needs to come out too, because it carries a higher risk of cancer. The Petfolk SouthPark vet checks for this at the exam.

What age should my pet be spayed or neutered?

The AAHA and AVMA both encourage deciding the age together with your vet, based on breed, size, health and home life, rather than one age for everyone.

  • Cats: before the first heat, since cats can get pregnant very young. Across Petfolk's Charlotte-area clinics, about 3 in 4 cats spayed or neutered (74%) were under a year old, typically about 7 months (October 2025 to September 2026).

  • Small and medium dogs: often around 6 months.

  • Large and giant breed dogs: often later, after growth slows, because sex hormones play a role in bone and joint development. At Petfolk SouthPark, at least 1 in 4 dog spays and neuters (27%) were for dogs over 50 pounds.

  • Adult or rescue pets: any time they are healthy.

At Petfolk SouthPark, the typical dog was spayed or neutered at about 12 months old (October 2025 to September 2026).

How does spay or neuter surgery day go?

Surgery day at Petfolk SouthPark follows four steps.

  1. Before: the vet does an exam and usually blood work to check organ function; the blood work page explains those tests. You get fasting instructions for the night before.

  2. Anesthesia: your pet is fully asleep, and the team watches breathing and heart rate throughout.

  3. Pain control: medicine is given around the surgery, and you go home with more.

  4. Going home: most pets go home the same day once awake and steady, with written aftercare instructions.

How do I care for my pet after a spay or neuter?

Most pets need about 10 to 14 days of limited activity and no licking while the incision heals.

  • Keep the cone or recovery suit on whenever you can't watch closely.

  • Check the incision once or twice a day. A clean, closed line with mild redness is normal early on.

  • Keep walks short and on leash; no running, jumping on furniture or rough play.

  • No baths or swimming until the vet clears it.

  • Offer a small meal the first evening, and never give human pain medicine.

  • Call Petfolk SouthPark if the incision is open, oozing or very swollen.

Does spaying or neutering lower the Charlotte pet license fee?

Yes. In Charlotte and unincorporated Mecklenburg County, a yearly pet license costs about a third as much for a spayed or neutered pet as for an unaltered one, according to Charlotte Animal Care & Control. Keep your Petfolk SouthPark surgery record as proof.

When is a problem after a spay or neuter an emergency?

If your pet has pale gums, a swollen or hard belly, bleeding from the incision that won't stop, or seems very weak after surgery, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital. Mild sleepiness on the first evening is expected.

For lump removals and other soft tissue operations, the pet surgery page explains how those visits work.
