What a Fecal Exam Reveals

A fecal exam helps identify intestinal parasites that may be affecting your pet, even when they appear completely healthy. Dogs and cats can carry parasites like roundworms, hookworms, whipworms, tapeworms, or giardia without showing obvious signs. A simple stool sample allows our veterinary team to detect issues that cannot be seen from the outside.

Some parasites matter beyond your pet's own comfort. Roundworms and hookworms can pass to people, especially kids who play in yards or gardens where pets go to the bathroom.

Signs Your Pet May Need This Test

This kind of exam isn't just for pets who seem sick. Puppies and kittens need one as part of getting started right, and adult dogs and cats benefit from routine checks too. Watch for soft or watery stool lasting more than a day or two, visible worms in the stool, a dull coat or slow weight loss, new pets joining your home, and outdoor access to soil or other animals.

Bringing your pet in for this exam is about as low-stress as a vet visit gets, no shaving, no needles, just a small stool sample. You'll bring in a fresh sample, or our team will collect one during a wellness exam if that's easier. Most results come back the same visit.
