How do I know when it is time?
Usually there is no single moment. The vet at Petfolk Nora will look at your pet's ordinary day with you (eating, sleeping, getting up off the floor) as closely as at the diagnosis itself. Questions to ask yourself:
Does my pet still eat, drink and want treats?
Can they stand, walk and get comfortable to sleep?
Are there more bad days than good days in a week?
Is pain still controlled with medicine?
Do they still greet me, or enjoy the things they used to?
Mark each day on a calendar, good or bad. When the bad days start to win, book a quality-of-life visit. You can come to it with no decision made.
What happens during a euthanasia appointment?
At Petfolk Nora, euthanasia follows clear, gentle steps:
Arrival: the team brings you to a quiet room. You can handle paperwork and payment first, so you do not have to think about it later.
Time together: you can take as long as you need before anything starts.
Sedation: the vet gives a sedative first, so your pet becomes deeply relaxed and sleepy.
The final injection: once your pet is fully asleep, the vet gives the last medicine, usually into a vein. It works within a few minutes.
Confirming: the vet listens to the heart and tells you when your pet has passed.
After: you can stay with your pet as long as you like.
It is normal for a pet's eyes to stay open, or for a last breath or muscle twitch to happen after the heart stops. These are reflexes. They are not pain.
Should I stay in the room?
That choice is yours, and either one is okay. Many pet parents at Petfolk Nora stay, with a hand on their pet and talking to them the whole time; others say goodbye before the sedation and wait outside. Neither is wrong. Children can be part of the goodbye, too, if you think it is right for them.
Gentle care to the end
Fear Free handling does not stop at the last visit. The team at Petfolk Nora uses soft blankets, low lights when possible, treats if your pet can still eat them, and slow, quiet movements. Bring a favorite bed, blanket or toy if it helps your pet feel at home.
So grateful for everyone at the Nora location, they’ve done wonders for my cat.

Planning ahead
If you can, plan the visit before a hard day forces it. Things to decide in advance:
Who will come: family members, kids or other pets.
A last good day: a favorite meal, a slow walk on a flat part of the Monon Trail, or time in the sun at home.
Aftercare: ask the team at Petfolk Nora what options are available for your pet's body, such as cremation, and how long each takes.
Paperwork: handled before the appointment, if you like.
Cost and paperwork
You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. Ask for aftercare to be in the estimate. Then nothing on the day is a surprise.
If your pet is suddenly struggling
If your pet is in sudden severe pain, cannot breathe well or collapses and Petfolk Nora is closed, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as MedVet Indianapolis in Carmel, which takes emergencies at any hour with no appointment needed.
