Which vaccines does my dog need in Indiana?
At Petfolk Nora, every adult dog gets the core vaccines, and the vet adds others based on lifestyle:
Rabies: required by Indiana law for dogs 3 months and older (345 IAC 1-5-2).
Distemper-parvo (DHPP): protects against distemper, parvovirus, adenovirus and parainfluenza.
Bordetella (kennel cough): for dogs who board, go to daycare, groomers or dog parks.
Leptospirosis: for dogs who drink from puddles, ponds or creeks, or meet wildlife.
Canine influenza: sometimes asked for by boarding places or daycare.
Your vet asks how your dog spends a normal week, then suggests only the shots that fit.
How often does my adult dog need boosters?
Most adult dogs at Petfolk Nora get a rabies booster every 1 or 3 years, depending on the vaccine used. Indiana's rule follows the label: a dog on a 3-year product still needs a booster 12 months after the first dose, then one within every 36 months. DHPP is usually every 3 years after the puppy series and first-year booster. Bordetella, lepto and flu are often yearly.
Your dog's record shows each due date, so you do not have to track them yourself.
New to Nora with a grown dog
Many families move to Nora from other parts of Indianapolis, from Carmel or from out of state. If that is you, bring your dog's old vaccine records, or give the team the name of your last clinic so they can ask for them. The vet at Petfolk Nora reads each date and keeps your dog on the same schedule, so no shot is repeated without a reason. If the records are lost, the vet will explain your options and which boosters make sense now. A dog with no proof of rabies vaccine will need one to meet Indiana law, so plan for that at the first visit.
Shots for dog parks and boarding
Indy Parks lists the same records for each of its dog parks, including Broad Ripple Dog Park on Broad Ripple Avenue. To register, you bring shot records that show current rabies, parvo, distemper and Bordetella. Most boarding and daycare spots ask for the same list. Petfolk Nora can give you a printed or emailed copy after the visit.
If your dog walks the Monon Trail or swims at a lake, ask about leptospirosis. It spreads through the urine of wildlife, and standing water is a common source.
What happens at a vaccine visit?
At Petfolk Nora, a vaccine visit includes an exam, because a vaccine works best in a healthy dog. The steps:
The vet checks your dog from nose to tail.
You talk about where your dog goes, so the right shots are chosen.
The shots are given quickly, with treats and gentle hands.
The record is updated, and you get the next due dates.
Fear Free handling is standard. For dogs who dread needles, the team can use a lick mat, peanut butter or a quiet room.
My experience with taking my dog to Petfolk was excellent.

After the shots
Most dogs are a bit tired or sore where the shot went in, for a day or so. That is normal. Call Petfolk Nora if you see:
Swelling of the face or muzzle
Hives or bumps all over
Vomiting or diarrhea
If your dog has trouble breathing or collapses after a shot, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as MedVet Indianapolis in Carmel. These reactions are rare.
Cost of dog vaccines
You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. A PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year and covers routine care like yearly exams and core vaccines under one fee.
