Which vaccines does my dog need?

At Petfolk Noblesville, the vet sorts vaccines into two groups:

Core vaccines, for every dog:

  1. Rabies. Required by Indiana law. After the first shot, the next is due in 1 year, then every 1 or 3 years depending on the vaccine label.

  2. DAPP (distemper, adenovirus, parainfluenza, parvovirus). Boosted 1 year after the puppy series, then usually every 3 years.

Lifestyle vaccines, based on your dog's routine:

  1. Leptospirosis. Spread through the urine of wildlife in puddles, ponds and wet grass. Yearly.

  2. Bordetella (kennel cough). Often required by daycares, groomers and boarding kennels.

  3. Canine influenza. For dogs in close contact with many other dogs.

  4. Lyme. Sometimes suggested for dogs who spend a lot of time in woods or tall grass.

Do trail dogs need lepto?

Often, yes. Leptospirosis bacteria live in standing water and soggy ground that raccoons, deer and rodents visit. Dogs who wade along the White River near Forest Park, splash at the edge of Morse Reservoir or sniff wet grass along the Levee Trail have more chances to meet it. At Petfolk Noblesville the vet will ask where your dog walks and swims before suggesting a lepto plan. It takes two doses a few weeks apart the first time, then a yearly booster.

Brought my 9 week old Bernese Mountain Dog in for Canine Cough, which is pretty scary if your dogs have never had a cold! They took their time, I felt heard, and Henry is now on the mend.

Records for daycare and boarding

Most Noblesville daycares, groomers and boarding kennels ask for proof of rabies, DAPP and Bordetella before your dog's first stay, and some want Bordetella given at least a few days ahead. Plan the vaccine visit a week or two before a trip so the shots have time to work. The team at Petfolk Noblesville can send the records to you after the visit, so you have them ready at drop-off.

Adopted from the Humane Society for Hamilton County? Bring the shelter's paperwork. Many rescue dogs already have a first DAPP or rabies shot, and the vet will build on that instead of starting over.

What happens at a vaccine visit?

Vaccines at Petfolk Noblesville are given at an exam, so the vet first checks that your dog is well enough to get them. The visit includes:

  • A nose-to-tail exam and weight check.

  • A review of your dog's records, so no shot is repeated by mistake.

  • Shots given with Fear Free handling: treats, a calm room and as little restraint as possible.

  • A printed or emailed rabies certificate for your records, daycare or the groomer.

  • A reminder schedule for the next boosters.

What do dog vaccines cost?

Vaccines are given at wellness exams, which start at $99 at Petfolk Noblesville, or are included with PetfolkCare, which starts at $199 a year. Each vaccine is priced separately. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit.

After the shots

Mild soreness at the shot spot or a sleepy evening is common. Keep the day easy, skip the long hike, and offer water and a normal meal. Call Petfolk Noblesville at (463) 217-5944 during open hours if your dog has vomiting, hives or a puffy face. For trouble breathing or collapse after a vaccine, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as MedVet Indianapolis on Mayflower Park Dr in Carmel.
