Puppy Vaccines in Missouri City, TX, From Your Local Vet

The full puppy shot series, plus deworming and the first heartworm prevention.

Puppy vaccines at Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Missouri City start at 6 to 8 weeks old and repeat every 3 to 4 weeks until your puppy is about 16 weeks. The core shot is distemper-parvo (DHPP). Rabies comes at about 12 to 16 weeks, and leptospirosis and kennel cough are added based on your puppy's life.

Each visit is also a chance to check growth, deworm, start parasite prevention and ask every question new puppy parents have. If you just brought home a puppy and need a vet in Missouri City, book the first visit within a week or two.

Call (832) 225-3315 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome, and the clinic is open weekends.

What is the puppy vaccine schedule?

A typical plan looks like this. The vet adjusts it for your puppy's age, health and any shots already given.

  • 6 to 8 weeks: first DHPP, exam, deworming

  • 10 to 12 weeks: second DHPP, often leptospirosis and Bordetella (kennel cough)

  • 14 to 16 weeks: third DHPP, second leptospirosis, rabies

  • 1 year: boosters, then adult dog vaccines from there

Across Petfolk, puppies typically start their shots with us at about 11 weeks old, and about 8 in 10 come back for at least a second distemper-parvo booster (Oct 1, 2025 to Sep 30, 2026). Finishing the series matters, because one shot isn't enough to protect against parvo.

Why are boosters needed every few weeks?

Puppies get antibodies from their mother's milk. Those antibodies protect them early on, but they also block vaccines from working. No one knows the exact week a puppy's own immune system takes over, so the shots repeat until about 16 weeks to cover the gap. A puppy that missed a booster by a week or two usually doesn't need to start over. Call the clinic, and the vet will slot in the next shot as soon as possible.

Where can my puppy go before the shots are done?

Parvo virus lives in soil for months and spreads through dog poop. Until your puppy is fully vaccinated:

  • Carry your puppy, or use your own yard.

  • Skip dog parks, including Kitty Hollow Bark Park, and pet store floors.

  • Puppy classes are fine if they require vaccine records and clean the floors.

  • Visit friends' healthy, vaccinated dogs at home.

  • Wipe paws after walks in shared spaces like apartment lawns.

Missouri City also doesn't allow dogs to run off leash anywhere inside city limits, so get your puppy used to a leash early.

I’m thankful for the support and understanding of care and needs for my new puppy.

What else happens at puppy visits?

  • Deworming. Most puppies are born with roundworms. See deworming.

  • Heartworm, flea and tick prevention. Texas ranked first in the nation for heartworm in the American Heartworm Society's 2025-data survey, so prevention starts young here.

  • Microchip. Many pet parents add one at a puppy visit or at spay or neuter time.

  • Fear Free handling, lots of treats and gentle restraint, so your puppy learns the vet is a good place.

Rabies and city registration

Once your puppy has the rabies shot, Missouri City asks you to register any dog over 4 months with Missouri City Animal Services. You'll need the rabies certificate from the clinic. Fees are lower for dogs that are microchipped and spayed or neutered.

Puppy visit costs

A wellness exam at Petfolk Missouri City starts at $99 per visit, and vaccines and deworming are added based on age. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. PetfolkCare membership starts at $199 a year and can help spread the cost of a busy first year.

Signs of parvo

Vomiting, bloody diarrhea, not eating and low energy in a puppy can be parvo. Call the clinic right away. A puppy that is weak, cold or won't stand needs a 24-hour emergency hospital such as VEG on University Blvd in Sugar Land.
