Pet Blood Work in Missouri City, TX, From Your Local Vet
Blood, urine and stool tests, many run in our own lab so you can get answers during the visit.
Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Missouri City is a vet in Missouri City, TX, with an in-house lab for many blood, urine and stool tests. Many results come back while you wait, so the vet can start treatment in the same visit. Tests the clinic can't run on site go to an outside lab.
Blood work shows what an exam alone can't: how the kidneys and liver are working, whether there's an infection, and whether your pet is ready for anesthesia.
Call (832) 225-3315 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome.
What can a blood test show?
The two most common panels are:
A complete blood count (CBC): red cells for anemia, white cells for infection or inflammation, and platelets for clotting
A chemistry panel: kidney and liver values, blood sugar, protein, and salts like sodium and potassium
Other tests check thyroid levels in older cats and dogs, heartworm and tick-borne disease in dogs, and blood sugar in pets that suddenly drink and pee a lot.
Which tests will my pet need?
It depends on why you came in:
Vomiting or diarrhea: often a CBC and chemistry panel to check for dehydration and organ trouble. Between Oct 1, 2025 and Sep 30, 2026, roughly 4 in 10 of these visits at our Houston-area clinics included blood work.
A senior checkup: a yearly baseline makes small changes easy to spot next time
Before surgery or a dental cleaning: a check that anesthesia is a good fit
Long-term medicine: some drugs need a blood check every few months
Do I have to say yes to every test?
No. The vet will explain what each test could find and how the answer would change the plan. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. If cost is a worry, ask which tests matter most today and which can wait. You make the call.
What I appreciated most was that he explained everything thoroughly before any treatment was provided.

Urine and stool tests
A urine test looks for infection, crystals and sugar, and shows how well the kidneys concentrate. For a clean sample, the vet may collect it with a fine needle guided by ultrasound. A fecal test checks a fresh stool sample for worm eggs and other parasites.
Reading the numbers
Each result is shown next to a normal range. One value a little high or low doesn't always mean your pet is sick. A dog that was excited during the draw can show a high blood sugar, and a pet that skipped water can look a bit dry. The vet reads the whole picture: the exam, the history and every value together. If something is borderline, a recheck in a few weeks often answers the question without more tests.
Ask for a printout. Comparing this year's numbers with next year's is one of the best ways to spot slow changes in kidneys or the thyroid.
Lab test pricing
Lab costs depend on which tests are run, and they are added to an exam. A wellness exam starts at $99 and a sick exam starts at $135 at Petfolk Missouri City. CareCredit financing is accepted, and you get records for pet insurance claims.
Making the blood draw easy
Most blood draws take about a minute, from a leg or the neck. Fear Free handling, treats and a quiet room help nervous pets. If your pet is scared of the vet, say so when you book. Ask whether your pet should skip breakfast, and bring a fresh stool sample in a clean bag if the team asks for one.
When a result is urgent
Most results lead to a plan you can start at home. If a result shows your pet is very sick, the team will explain the next step right away. A pet that collapses, has pale gums or struggles to breathe needs a 24-hour emergency hospital such as VEG on University Blvd in Sugar Land.
