After-Hours Urgent Care for Pets

Vet examines distressed dog on exam table during after-hours urgent care in Midlothian

Pets don't get sick on a schedule, and many regular vets are closed on weekends or booked for days. Our Midlothian clinic, on Steam Avenue off Midlothian Turnpike, is open 8 AM to 6 PM every day, including Saturdays and Sundays. After 6 PM, a 24-hour emergency hospital is the right place to go.

Call (804) 603-9509 during our hours. We hold same-day spots every day.

When it's an emergency: After 6 PM, or any time your pet has trouble breathing, collapses, has a seizure, is bleeding heavily, may have been poisoned, has a swollen belly with retching, or is a male cat straining with no urine, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital. We're open 8 AM to 6 PM, seven days a week, and we don't provide overnight care.

When Your Regular Vet Is Closed or Full

If it's a weekend, or your regular vet can't see your pet for days, we can usually help the same day. You don't need to be an existing patient. Bring any records you have, and we'll send a visit summary to your regular vet afterward so your pet's care stays in one place.

"We were relieved to find them open on weekends."

— Kate O., Petfolk client.

After 6 PM: Emergency Hospital or Wait Until Morning?

If your pet is stable, alert, drinking, and comfortable, many problems can wait for us to open at 8 AM. Call first thing. If you're unsure, a 24-hour hospital or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (for possible toxins) can help you decide. The AVMA's list of animal emergencies that need immediate care covers signs that shouldn't wait.

  • Go now: trouble breathing, collapse, seizures, heavy bleeding, bloat signs, urinary blockage, poisoning, heatstroke, or severe pain.

  • Usually OK until morning: one vomit in a bright pet, a mild limp, an itchy ear, a small scrape.

When This Isn't the Right Visit

A pet who needs overnight monitoring, continuous IV fluids, or emergency surgery needs a 24-hour hospital. If we find that during a visit, the doctor stabilizes your pet and refers you.

Know Your 24-Hour Hospital Before You Need It

The worst time to look up an emergency hospital is at 11 PM with a sick pet in the car. Today, while things are calm, find the 24-hour emergency hospital nearest your home in the Midlothian or Chesterfield area, check its route from your neighborhood via Midlothian Turnpike or Route 288, and save its number in your phone next to ours.

Ask our team if you're not sure where to go. We're happy to point you to nearby options.

What a Weekend Urgent Visit Costs

Weekend urgent visits cost the same as weekday visits: $135, or $36 with a PetfolkCare membership ($199 a year). Tests and treatment are priced separately, with an estimate first. Emergency hospitals set their own prices.

Weekends Covered, Nights Planned

Save our number, (804) 603-9509, and your nearest 24-hour hospital's number today. Between the two, you'll know where to go any day of the week.
