Rabies Vaccine in Mansfield, TX, From Your Local Vet

The shot Texas requires for every dog and cat, with the certificate you need for your city license.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Mansfield is a vet in Mansfield, TX, that gives the rabies vaccine to dogs and cats and hands you the signed certificate the same day. Texas requires every dog and cat to have it by 16 weeks of age and to stay current for life.

Once signs appear, rabies has no cure, in pets or in people. The vaccine is what keeps your pet off the list and out of a long quarantine after a scare with wildlife.

Call (817) 241-2355 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome.

What does Texas law require?

Texas Administrative Code rule 169.29 says the owner of each dog or cat must have it vaccinated against rabies by 16 weeks of age, by a vet or under a vet's direct supervision. Boosters must stay within the interval on the vaccine label. You also need to keep the certificate and show it if an official asks.

Two things surprise people:

  • Indoor cats are covered. The rule says each dog or cat, with no indoor exception.

  • A feed-store shot you give yourself does not count, because a vet has to give or supervise it.

How often does my pet need a rabies booster?

At Petfolk Mansfield, the first rabies shot is good for one year. After that, the vet uses either a one-year or a three-year vaccine, and the certificate shows the exact due date. If your pet's rabies shot lapsed, the vet will tell you whether the next one counts as a one-year or a three-year shot.

Why does Mansfield ask for the certificate?

The City of Mansfield requires a city pet license for every dog and cat, and you upload a current rabies certificate to apply. Licenses run January through December and are renewed each January, even when your pet has a three-year rabies shot. The city requires both the rabies tag and the city license tag to be worn.

Mans Best Field Dog Park also checks for a current city tag, so the rabies certificate is your ticket in.

Where does rabies come from around here?

In 2025, the Texas Department of State Health Services confirmed rabies in 456 animals. Wildlife made up 91% of them, with bats first and skunks second. Domestic cases were rare but real: 19 cats and 5 dogs.

In Mansfield, that means a bat in the garage, a skunk under the deck or a coyote in the greenbelt behind a backyard fence. Never touch a bat with bare hands. If your pet tangles with wildlife, call Petfolk Mansfield at (817) 241-2355 the same day.

If your pet bites someone

Under Texas rule 169.27, a dog or cat that bites a person goes into a 10-day observation period, whether or not it is vaccinated. Your pet should not get any vaccines during that time. A current rabies certificate makes the process much simpler, so keep the paper or the record in your Petfolk app.

If your pet is bitten by a wild animal instead, wash the wound with soap and water while wearing gloves. Then call the clinic and Mansfield Animal Care & Control. A current rabies certificate makes every next step simpler, which is the best reason of all to keep the shot current.

The visit itself

The vet checks your pet before giving the shot, because vaccines go to healthy pets. Fear Free, gentle handling keeps it quick. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. A wellness exam at Petfolk Mansfield starts at $99, or it is free with the PetfolkCare plan.

Mild soreness or sleepiness for a day is normal. Facial swelling, hives or vomiting soon after the shot needs a call. If your pet collapses or struggles to breathe, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists on U.S. 287.
