Pet Wound & Injury Care in Mansfield, TX, From Your Local Vet

Cuts, bites, torn nails and limps seen the same day, so a small wound doesn't turn into a big infection.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Mansfield is a vet in Mansfield, TX, that treats cuts, bite wounds, torn nails, paw injuries and sudden limps the same day. Most wounds heal best when they are cleaned and closed within a few hours, so it pays not to wait until next week.

Call (817) 241-2355 on your way, or walk in. Weekend visits are on the regular schedule.

Is this an injury for a 24-hour hospital?

Skip the clinic and go straight to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as Thrive Pet Healthcare Specialists at 301 U.S. 287 Frontage Rd, Mansfield, if your pet:

  • Was hit by a car, even if they seem fine

  • Is bleeding hard enough to soak through a towel in a few minutes

  • Has a wound on the chest or belly that bubbles or shows anything inside

  • Can't stand, or is breathing fast and hard

  • Fell from a height or was attacked by a large dog and is in shock

For everything else on this page, Petfolk Mansfield can usually help today. If you can't tell, call and describe what you see.

Which wounds can be treated here?

  • Cuts from fences, glass or sharp yard edging

  • Bite and puncture wounds from another dog or a coyote

  • Torn or broken nails that bleed

  • Cut paw pads and burns from hot pavement

  • Fish hooks, thorns and splinters stuck in the skin

  • Hot spots and scrapes that are getting infected

  • A new limp, a swollen leg or a toe your pet won't let you touch

Digital x-rays on site can show a broken bone or a hook under the skin. Many lab tests run in the clinic's own lab, and medicine comes from the on-site pharmacy.

What should I do before we get there?

  1. Press a clean towel or gauze on a bleeding wound and hold it steady.

  2. Don't put hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or ointment on it. These can slow healing.

  3. Cover the wound loosely if your pet keeps licking it.

  4. Use a leash or carrier. Even the sweetest pet may snap when hurt.

  5. For a fish hook, don't pull it out. Cut the line and let the vet remove it.

If the wound is on a paw, slip a clean sock over it and tape the top loosely so your pet can't lick it in the car. Hot pavement burns can look like a pale or peeling pad, and Texas A&M vets say pavement too hot for your hand is too hot for paws.

How will the vet fix the wound?

The vet checks your pet's whole body, not just the cut you can see, since bites often hide deeper damage. Small wounds may only need cleaning and a bandage. Bigger ones are shaved, flushed and closed with stitches or staples, often with sedation and local numbing. Fear Free, gentle handling helps scared or hurting pets stay calm.

You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. An urgent exam at Petfolk Mansfield starts at $135.

Coyotes, bites and the city rules

Mansfield Animal Care & Control shares coyote coexistence guides and a coyote reporting page for residents. A pet bitten by a coyote or a stray needs its rabies record checked, so bring proof of the last rabies shot if you have it. Texas law puts any dog or cat that bites a person into a 10-day observation, even if vaccinated.

Animal control answers bite and injured-animal calls at any hour. For a stray that is hurt or acting oddly, call them instead of picking it up.

After the visit

Keep the cone on and the bandage dry. Check the wound twice a day for redness, swelling, smell or discharge, and call if you see any. Most stitches come out at a recheck in 10 to 14 days. For a deeper repair, see pet surgery in Mansfield.
