Dog Vaccines in Lakewood, Dallas, From Your Local Vet

Core shots every dog needs, plus the extras that fit your dog's East Dallas life.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Lakewood is a vet in Lakewood, East Dallas, that vaccinates adult dogs against rabies, distemper, parvovirus, Bordetella and other preventable diseases. The vet looks at how your dog actually lives, then recommends only the shots that make sense.

Some vaccines every dog should have. Others depend on where your dog goes: daycare in East Dallas, the trails around White Rock Lake, or a boarding stay when you travel.

Call (682) 339-7822 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome, and the clinic is open weekends.

Which vaccines does every adult dog need?

Every adult dog in Lakewood needs the core vaccines: rabies and distemper-parvo (often written DHPP or DAPP). Distemper and parvovirus spread between dogs and can be life-threatening, and rabies is required by law in Texas and in the City of Dallas. After the puppy series, core boosters are usually given every one to three years, depending on the vaccine.

The vet checks your dog's record and gives only what is due. If you have papers from a past clinic, bring them so nothing is repeated.

Which extra shots fit your dog's routine?

These are lifestyle vaccines. Whether your dog needs them depends on daily life:

  • Bordetella (kennel cough). Most daycares, groomers and boarding places in Dallas ask for it. It is often given as drops in the nose.

  • Leptospirosis. Spread through water and soil that wildlife has touched. Ask the vet about it if your dog drinks from puddles, splashes in creeks or walks the White Rock Lake shoreline.

  • Canine influenza. Worth asking about if your dog boards, goes to daycare or plays at busy dog parks.

The vet will ask a few simple questions: Does your dog go to daycare? Swim? Travel? Then you decide together which extras are worth it.

All of the ladies there were incredibly nice and weren’t afraid of my Large dog. I could tell he was comfortable and happy to be treated like the good boy he is.

Dallas rules every dog parent should know

  • Rabies is the law. The City of Dallas lists failing to vaccinate a dog for rabies as a ticketed offense on its pet laws page.

  • Microchip too. Dogs four months and older in Dallas must be microchipped. Many dogs get it done at a vaccine visit. See pet microchipping in Lakewood.

  • Dog parks check tags. Dallas off-leash parks, including Mockingbird Point, ask that dogs wear a tag showing a current rabies vaccine.

Keep the rabies certificate from your visit. Daycares, boarders and apartment managers often ask for a copy. Take a photo of it too, so it is on your phone when a front desk asks.

What should I expect after my dog's shots?

A sore spot, a quiet evening or a smaller appetite for a day is common. Your dog should be back to normal within a day or two.

Call the clinic if your dog has facial swelling, hives, vomiting or seems very weak after a vaccine. If your dog has trouble breathing or collapses, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital right away, such as Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) at 4500 North Central Expressway, Dallas, TX 75206.

If your dog has reacted to a vaccine before, tell the team before the shot. The vet may split vaccines across visits or give medicine first.

Calm visits for nervous dogs

Fear Free handling is how every Petfolk clinic works. The team offers treats, lets your dog sniff the room first and gives shots quickly once your dog has settled. Big, worried dogs are welcome. The team works at your dog's pace. If your dog gets anxious in the car or the lobby, tell the team when you book, and ask whether waiting in the car until the room is ready would help.

Cost and booking
