Cat Vaccines in Lakewood, Dallas, From Your Local Vet

Rabies and FVRCP for every cat, plus feline leukemia when your cat's life calls for it.

Petfolk Veterinary & Urgent Care - Lakewood is a vet in Lakewood, East Dallas, that gives cats the vaccines they need: rabies and FVRCP for every cat, and feline leukemia (FeLV) for cats who go outside or live with cats who do.

Indoor cats need shots too. A screen door, a new kitten or an escape into the yard is enough contact to matter, and Dallas law covers indoor cats the same as outdoor ones.

Call (682) 339-7822 or book online. Walk-ins are welcome, and the clinic is open weekends.

What vaccines does my cat need?

Every cat in Lakewood needs two core vaccines:

  • Rabies. Required by Texas rule and by the City of Dallas, for indoor and outdoor cats.

  • FVRCP. Covers feline herpesvirus, calicivirus and panleukopenia. The first two cause most cat colds, and panleukopenia is a serious virus that spreads easily between cats.

Feline leukemia (FeLV) is a lifestyle vaccine. The vet usually recommends it for kittens and for cats who spend time outdoors, live with outdoor cats, or foster with a rescue.

Do indoor cats in Dallas really need vaccines?

Yes. The City of Dallas lists failing to vaccinate a cat for rabies as a ticketed offense on its pet laws page, and the rule does not exempt indoor cats. Viruses that cause cat colds can also come in on shoes or with a new pet.

For a strictly indoor adult cat, the vet may space FVRCP boosters further apart. It's a choice you make together after looking at your cat's history.

Making the visit easier on your cat

Cats often hate the car more than the exam. A few steps help:

  1. Leave the carrier out at home for a few days with a soft towel inside.

  2. Skip the big meal before the drive, so your cat is calmer and hungrier for treats.

  3. Cover the carrier with a light towel in the car.

  4. Let your cat come out on their own in the exam room.

Fear Free handling is the standard at every Petfolk clinic. The team keeps voices low, handles gently and lets a shy cat take its time.

How often are cat boosters due?

After the kitten series, most cats get a booster a year later. From there, rabies and FVRCP are usually given every one to three years, depending on the vaccine and your cat's lifestyle. FeLV boosters depend on whether your cat still goes outside. The vet tells you what is due at each wellness exam.

Across Petfolk, kittens typically get their first FVRCP with us at about 10 weeks old (Petfolk data for kittens starting Oct 1, 2025 to Jun 30, 2026). Bringing home a kitten? See kitten vaccines in Lakewood.

Adopted, fostered or new to Dallas

Cats from a shelter or rescue often arrive with part of their vaccines done. Bring the paperwork, even if it is a handwritten card, so the vet can see what was given and when. Cats who have moved here from another state need a Texas-valid rabies vaccine, and the vet can check whether the current one counts. If you foster for a local rescue, tell the team. Foster homes see more new cats, so the vet may suggest feline leukemia protection for your own cats too.

After the shots

A sleepy cat, a sore spot or a smaller appetite for a day is common. Call the clinic if you see swelling of the face, vomiting or hives. A lump at the shot spot that is still there a few weeks later should be checked. If your cat has trouble breathing or collapses, go to a 24-hour emergency hospital such as Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) at 4500 North Central Expressway, Dallas, TX 75206.

Cost and where to find us
