Is this injury too serious for urgent care?

Some injuries need a 24-hour emergency hospital right away. Go straight there if your pet:

  • Was hit by a car, even if they seem fine

  • Is bleeding heavily and it won't slow with firm pressure

  • Has a wound to the chest or belly, or you can see inside

  • Has trouble breathing, pale gums or has collapsed

  • Can't stand or move the back legs

  • Was attacked by a much bigger dog and has many puncture wounds

In Lower Greenville, Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) at 4500 North Central Expressway, Dallas, TX 75206, is open 24 hours. For everything else on this page, Petfolk Lakewood can usually help the same day.

  • Scrapes and hot spots that a pet has licked raw

What should I do before I get to the clinic?

A little first aid helps:

  1. Stay calm and keep your pet as still as you can.

  2. Press a clean cloth or gauze on a bleeding wound and hold it.

  3. Cover the wound loosely to keep it clean. Don't use hydrogen peroxide, alcohol or human creams.

  4. Use a muzzle or wrap a towel around a scared pet. Even the sweetest dog may bite when hurt.

  5. Carry small pets in a carrier, and support a large dog's back with a towel sling.

Why do bite wounds need a vet?

Bites are tricky. Teeth leave small holes in the skin but tear tissue underneath, and they push bacteria deep inside. A bite that looks tiny today can turn into a swollen, painful abscess in two or three days. Cats are very prone to this. The vet will clip and clean the area, check how deep it goes, and often start antibiotics and pain relief.

Bring your pet's rabies records too. Texas requires dogs and cats to be vaccinated against rabies, and the vet will check if a booster is needed after a bite. See rabies vaccine in Lakewood.

How the vet treats a wound

The vet examines your pet first and explains the plan. Treatment may include clipping the fur, flushing the wound, closing it with stitches or glue, a bandage, and medicine for pain and infection. Some wounds heal best left open. A limp may need pet x-rays in Lakewood to rule out a break. Larger wounds may need sedation so your pet stays comfortable.

The team handles hurt pets gently and calmly, using Fear Free methods to keep stress low.

Paying for injury care

A sick or urgent exam starts at $135. You'll get an estimate before any test or treatment. The final bill can differ if the plan changes during the visit. The clinic takes major cards, Apple Pay and CareCredit financing.

Holidays and runaway pets

Fireworks are illegal inside Dallas city limits, but neighbors still set them off around July 4 and New Year's. Scared dogs bolt through gates and get hurt. Keep pets inside on those nights, and check that ID tags and microchip details are current.

Caring for a wound at home

Keep the cone on until the vet says it can come off. Check the wound daily for swelling, redness, smell or discharge, and keep bandages clean and dry. Call the clinic if anything looks worse.
